"What we would say to Simon this time is that our objective is to be in the top half. If we push to be in the top half, which we were for most of the early part of the season, then that would be a good achievement.

"By the time you strike the critical part of the season, after Christmas, if you are in touch at that point you can really have a go.

"Of course we want to be in the play-offs but our reality is to press to be in the top half."

To Quote Patrick Cryne pre season

I fully expect Barnsley to finish in the top half of the Championship this season.
When he quoted this he fully expects this to be acheived, if we dont then Davey should go.
All i expected this season was mid table and was realistic enough to know that is all we could expect with the clubs financial restraints, but as usual Davey remains to decieve

He has done the job expected of him if he keeps us up. That is all we, and other clubs, can expect. At the start of the season you think, hope, plan, speculate to be higher up but if we aren't, but stay up, at least we can have another crack at it next season. So job done in that respect. If you don't get in the top 6 then it ultimately doesn't matter (purely in terms of the competition) where you finish, as long as you don't go down. That is the basics of the league system. And who is to say that we won't still be pushing for the top half. A season is 46 games long. Finishing in the top half would a very good achievement, staying up should be the minimum we aim for, but it will be job done if we do it again.

I know they are PC's words. But it was your title to the thread so I responded. I am one of those who think he will have done his job.

    Expectation or speculation?

"then that would be a good achievement."

Sounds like more than expectation. And who's to say we still won't reach the level of great achievement? At the start of a season have you ever heard a pessimistic chairman/manager/player? Every does it. Goals and targets change, but the minimum expectation is to stay in this division. We have only been in it for 2 full seasons.

If my boss sets me an objective for my job and I don't meet it then that isn't a success, it's a failure.

Football is a results driven business, if you scrape by and survive each year and people won't turn up and spend their hard earned cash. It's a hard world being a football manager.

RE: What we would say to Simon this time is that our objective is to be in the top half

Even a run in mid table wouldn't increase our gates. Getting to 4th last season had no effect. Year we went up to PL our crowds only increased once everyone realised we might actually have a chance of going up. At the end of the season it is probably better for us financially to be fighting a relegation because we have some massive games, don't have that hanging around mid table. Being up around the top 6 is unrealistic for us at the moment. What is important is ensuring we are in this division so we can continue to build. That is my expectation for the club. Could take 10 years, but it has to be 10 years in the Championship, L1 would set us back 10 years. Goals and targets need revising, and while it can be seen as a failure, it shouldn't be leading to SD getting sacked as he has done the job of keeping us up, again.
