Gillingham have signed defender Tom Williams on a free transfer from League One rivals Barnsley. The former West Ham United, Peterborough United and Birmingham City player leaves Oakwell after just one season with The Tykes and signed a two-year deal with The Gills. Barnsley will receive a sell-on fee for the 25-year-old, should Neale Cooper's side decide to move the left back on from The Priestfield Stadium in the future. Williams becomes Gillingham's second signing of the summer and his agent, Dan Fletcher, was pleased with the deal. "There was serious interest from a number of clubs in securing Tom's services," Fletcher told skysports.com "West Ham, Millwall and Sheffield Wednesday were three such clubs. "We see Tom, and he sees himself, as a Championship player, and Tom is looking forward to taking The Gills back into The Championship where they belong. "He sees them as a very well run, professional and ambitious club with excellent fans, and when Neale and Paul (Scally) started to make their interest serious, we were only too happy to talk to them and conclude the deal." Gillingham's search for new faces has seen them also hand a trial to Fulham youngster Nick Bagley this week.
Don't think we'd have let him go on a free if all those clubs were after him. Maybe it was Barnsley's Charlie Williams they were after - to do the stand-up at the club open day.
