In my opinion Treat yourself and buy them both. The Bartrop book is written by a family member and is 100% fact. The Boyle book has a narrative which I didn't really get to grips with. It reminds me of the "Dammed United" with its "he thought this" and "he said that" but once your past that it's historical content and accuracy is second to none. I dont think a Pre War football biography has ever been so well researched.
Cheers for the info. They're for my dad actually and I was thinking of getting them both. A member of my family who recently died knew some relatives of Tommy Boyle. Is it correct that he succumbed to drink and died in poverty?
Yes, he died penniless in a mental institution and was buried in an unmarked grave in Hoyland. On the back of the research, Barnsley FC and Burnley FC commisioned a gravestone to mark his resting place.
