Proper old school hard man was Tommy. Not sure he’d have hacked it in the modern game lol. RIP Tommy....
Should be remembered for being a tremendous footballer and leader and not just a legendary hard man. But he was definitely one of those - can’t think of a player today who comes close.
RIP big man proper footballer. Last I heard a lot of years ago he was on benefits through his playing days injuries . I’m sure there was controversy over it with the PFA and LFC coming on for some stick
That's right Marlon. Years of tough tackling took a heavy toll on his joints and latterly I believe he used a wheelchair. When I worked, I used to call in to Lancashire County Councils offices, which are in Preston and meet up with a lad called Geoff. He was big mates with Tommy and being born in Bootle he's still a regular at Anfield. He once confided that for some reason during their respective careers, Tommy had a big fall out with some senior members of the Liverpool team. Whatever it involved , apart from talking to them on the field, Tommy didn't talk to around six of the Liverpool first team when they were travelling to away games, on the Coach to a game, training or socialising.
This piece goes into the possible reasons why Tommy absolutely despised Emlyn Hughes. Firstly Smith was relieved of the Captains arm band and it was passed to Hughes and secondly, there seems to have been talk about colluding with the opposition to influence the result of a game by offering a bung. I would imagine that Smithy must have been approached and declined because he would never throw any Liverpool game. https://www.liverpool-kop.com/2008/04/why-did-club-legends-tommy-smith-and.html?m=0
