"Barnsley manager Andy Ritchie was left fuming after his near full strength Barnsley squad was left trailing in the wake of an enthusiastic and skillful Preston North End team which included several juniors and reserve team members, and the 4-0 defeat by the Lancashire side meant that once again Barnsley failed to secure a second round place in what can only be described, at this stage of the competition, a minor cup inconvenience.
Ritchie was dumbfounded by his side's inept first half performance in which his defence, if it can be so-called, were given a complete once-over by Preston's willing and able runners and the 3 goal half time defecit was no more, or less, than Barnsley deserved.
'We simply failed to turn up' raged the Reds' manager, 'and we got exactly what we deserved, f.-all. But I'll tell you what the other side of this will bring and that is certain change in the squad for our game on Saturday. There were too many of our lot out there tonight who thought that simply turning up to make up the numbers was enough to earn their wages. If I could apologise to those supporters who travelled here tonight then that's the least I could do, they are the ones I feel most sorry for, it was really very embarrassing, for them and for me. But believe me we'll be working very, very hard to put things right for the weekend, I will not stand shirkers in the teams I pick'
Barnsley's next game is against high riding Brentford on Saturday at Oakwell.
