BARNSLEY Football Club can today confirm that youngster Dale Tonge will leave Oakwell when his contract expires at the end of June.

The 21-year-old midfielder came up through the ranks at the Academy and made his first team bow as a substitute at Brentford in April 2004. He has gone on to make 55 first team appearances, eight of which have come this season.

Dale has spent the last few months on loan at Gillingham, making three appearances.

Barnsley Football Club would like to thank Dale for his services and wish him every success in the future.

This in my opinion is......

The worst decision Davey has made. Im all in favour of him having a crack with his own team with a full pre season. However, Tonge is a very good back up player for a number of positions.

To release Tonge is a mistake of the highest order.

Shame that ...

Davey clearly doesn't like the look of him and if that's the case then so be it.

I think that'll be a mistake in the long run but hope that I'm proven wrong.

I don't think that Tonge has ever let the team down whenever he's been called into action.

Agreed..

I'd like to know what has gone off for him not to figure in Davey's plans.

I'd also hope that we will replenish the squad with some quality eg

Keeper
Centre Halves
Two Full Backs
A defensive midfielder
A right winger
A left winger
A centre forrad

I'd agree from the little we've seen but there could be more to come from him (let's bloody hope so).

I thought Tonge did well most times he played for us and I'm not sure he ever got a fair crack at a run in the team.

Strange how people's memories differ

I remember umpteen times Tonge looking over his shoulder at the back of a left winger that'd just left him for dead. he's never BEEN a Championship footballer, people who saw him play 2 years ago maybe want to have a look at the last 30mins of us at Norwich away.

we should be aiming to keep players good enough for this level, not ones that might be useful if we get relegated.

definately is

and proved so last season

it seems that Mattis will become expensive backup - while we have Tonge who could already fill that role

bad decision Davey, but one that will be forgiven if he brings in the right players over the summer

He certainly wasnt a fullback,

I never saw him play anywhere else, so I cant comment on what he might have been somewhere else.

Did PC want a team of local lads in the team?

Any we give em all away? Id much rather have Kay Austin or Tonge than bloody Dwaine Mattis.

In what sense?

How many games did he play?

Looked out of his depth in League 1.

I hope they all get clubs and keep on playing.

Tonge was a useful player for us and I would like to have seen him stay on as a squad player. His versatility could have been useful and we could have loaned him out. But if SD doesnt fancy him then its his call. Its not like he was a key player.

Cryne said at a meeting once that he would like to see one day a team of academy lads in the side but getting promotion with a team of mercenaries would do.

RE: Was never going to play for Barnsley again..........

That was clear about 7 weeks ago, after I was told something whilst out in the local.

Was also informed that when he finally left, Tonge would make the issues known.
