There are roughly 62 million people in the UK and Elton John's candle in the wind has sold 4,860,000 copies in the UK meaning that roughly one in every 13 people have bought a copy of it as a single. The average house size in the UK is between 2.5 and 3 people (depending on the source) which means that one in every 5 houses in the UK have bought candle in the wind.
Just to annoy you again... If every person who bought the single only bought one copy and if only one member of each household bought a copy then all that would be, as you say, a fact. But contemporary news reports were showing many, many people buying multiple copies, sometimes hundreds at a time, while mum, dad, son and daughter of some households all had their own copy.
Bugger. I just knew something like that would be the case but hoped it wouldn't be so I ignored the possibility.
And yet it's one of those things isn't it. The biggest selling single ever and yet I don't know anyone who bought a copy. Just as the Daily Mail sells 30 million copies per year but I don't know anyone who's ever bought it (unless there was a good free CD or DVD with it).
