Bock is a strong lager Usually darker than a normal lager http://beeradvocate.com/beer/style/32 I've had Sam Adams double and triple bock.....the triple had the effect of making me feel more thisty the more I drunk! My tipple for tonight Black Sheep Bombadier p.s. I was in R&B on Racecommon Road last night - they didn't have any Brooklyn, seems I wasn't the only one buying it!
Info for all ale fans (slightly unrelated!) Did you know that the magnificent Old Speckled Hen is to be rebranded (it may even have taken place already now) at a lower ABV of 4.5%? The present version will cease production, and they are even attempting to introduce the smoothflow version at the same reduced ABV? Personally, I find it impossible to believe that they can do this without altering the flavour, and can only assume it isn't going to be for the better. I am gutted, as Hen is probably my favourite tipple, and have organised a boycott of the brewerys products in the pub I work in. Not that it is a big loss to them, but i guess every little helps.
RE: Info for all ale fans (slightly unrelated!) Can't believe that - like you it's one of my favourite beers, although it bloody sends me if I'm on it for the night! I could handle the 4.5% but the "smoothflow" version is just pure sacrilege. Not been the same drink though since Greene King bought it and moved production.
Gatehouse landlord told me Not my fave but still its a bit legendary.
Shame if it happens.
Coming to Gatehouse before Stoke match KFC?? some good ale on offer.

And yet.......... the website claims it "is now the number one choice at the checkout for those who enjoy a rich, strong beer to drink at home. In the premium bottled beer sector, Old Speckled Hen even outsells Newcastle Brown Ale" So why fix it if it ain't broke?! The website already has the "smooth" listed in the products
It has been tested in some outlets for a while now and Greene King claim that around 80% actually prefer the weaker version. I find that difficult to believe. If anyone would like to make their feelings known, the address is: oldspeckledhen@greeneking.co.uk Spartacus - I do tend to nip in the Gatehouse with mi dad before most home games so i'll keep an eye out for you!
London Pride Not good news about Old Speckled Hen though Still, if I want a stronger ale theres always Old Peculier
Abbot Ale..... unbeatable among British Beers in my opinion. Cans are better than bottled, but draught up at Elephant in Hemingfield to die for! PS my local on Gower serves a lurvely pint two (pint)
