I'd just seen that come up on BBC news too. Very sudden. I remember him and Boycott playing for England in the 1970s, just as I was getting interested in cricket. Age 66 - too soon that.
He was the England captain in the seventies when billionaire Kerry Packer wanted the TV rights for test cricket for his Channel9. The establishment stayed with the ABC and Packer retalliated by starting World Series Cricket. Tony Greig was Packers man and recruited the Rest of the World team which included Viv Richards et al. After a couple of years, World Series Cricket was successful and the Australian Cricket Board capitulated. The cricket factions were re-united and Packer has still got the cricket rights (he died mebby three years ago). Tony Greig has worked for Channel9 for thirty-five years commentating alongside Ritchie Benaud, Ian Chappel and Gower, Willis and anybody who is anybody in cricket circles... So Tony has had a high profile over here.... rip Tony...
Top player n all, look at his test averages batting and bowling, better then Botham and Flintoff yet never gets a mention.
