I remember seeing him at Barnsley Civic in the 70's. He was touring his solo album 'The Two Sides of Tony McPhee'. The second half of the show (and the second side of the album) consisted of his concept piece 'The Hunt'. And what a rum affair that was! Inspired by his anti-hunting convictions, it featured less of his guitar and more of him on synthesisers. It was a strangely stilted piece with very clunky lyrics. Best of all, the centrepiece of his stage set was a mannekin that looked like it had been nicked from Burton's shop window! The mannekin was holding a trident (not sure why) and it revolved on it's plinth. Hilarious! We all applauded like crazy, but I couldn't help wishing he'd come with the rest of his Groundhogs!
Sad news. First live band I ever saw at City Hall in 1971. Tony had been in poor health for a while but still very sad RIP TS McPhee
