His contract at Oakwell was due to expire in the summer.
The influential centre half turned out 28 times for the Reds during the 2004/2005 campaign although he struggled with injury in the final months. The 30-year-old former Mansfield and Nottingham Forest star made two appearances for Barnsley this season before joining Stockport County on loan back in August 2005.
Tony featured ten times for County although his spell at Edgeley Park was curtailed by a knee injury, from which he has now fully recovered and has turned out for the reserves in recent weeks.
In total Tony has made 30 first team appearances for the Reds, netting four goals.
Barnsley Football Club would like to thank Tony for his services over the last two seasons and wish him every success in the future.

The clear-art begins.........its going to be interesting........should he stay or should he go ??? If (and I dunt think we will) we go up And if we dunt go up Its going to be a very interesting close season Because surely now, Ritchie will know what he needs to get out of this division and if we go up what he will need in the Championship
Read it again I'm not wishing them to leave. I'm agreeing that it's ironic who was on the list to leave of most Barnsley fans last season. And how Colgan, Hassell and McP have become the mainstays of our season.
RE: Read it again hassel, mcphail, colgan and kay, whipping boy's for the crowd last season when results went against us,this year complete turnaround with three of em in the running for player of the year.
do we write player's off too early?
yep, too f**king right we do,
richard's, wright and haye's are this season's contender's on the moaning tw*t's get rid of list.

Both would have been my choices for free transfer's last season although Colgan, on last season's showing would have been up there.
Kay is still the whipping boy for many Can't understand as his performances this season have been up there with the likes Colgan, McPhail and Hassel.
literally done nothing this season got a season ticket for the treatment room, what a waste of wages, same with Conlon. Bestwishes to him in league 2/conference.
