I have been racking my brains to think of players originating from the Barnsley area who during the last 40 years say, who established themselves playing in the top division in England. This is the list that I have come up with. Please feel free to add any that I have missed.

    Goalkeepers
    Mark Crossley (Notts For)
    David Watson (Barnsley)

    Right Backs
    Nicky Eaden (Barnsley)

    Left Backs

    Centre Halfs
    Pat Howard (Newcastle Utd)
    Mick McCarthy (Manchester City)
    Arnold Sidebottom (Manchester Utd)
    Brian Greenhoff (Manchester Utd)
    Carl Tiler (Nottingham Forest)

    Centre Midfield
    Brian Greenhoff (again)
    David Speedie (Chelsea)
    Steve Agnew (Blackburn Rovers)

    Right Wing
    Stuart Barraclough (Newcastle United)
    Alan Woodward (Sheffield United)

    Left Wing
    Ian Banks (Leicester City)

    Strikers
    David Hirst (Sheffield Wed)
    Jimmy Greenhoff (Manchester Utd)
    Frank Casper (Burnley)
    David Speedie (again)

What I notice about this list is that there are only 14 players on the list and 5 of those never played for Barnsley, so perhaps my impression of the golden generation of players from Barnsley populating the best teams of the time happened before my football watching days... I am too young to have seen Tommy Taylor. I also notice that Barnsley has not produced a single player since Eaden and Watson played during the Premier season (OK Eaden also played for Birmingham and Wigan). Why has our town stopped producing good players?

Pity you can't go a bit further back to include The Greatest.

We seem to be doing well for keepers. No left backs yet though.
