Good beer but the service is appalling. The staff behind the bar look half asleep and if they got any slower they would be going backwards. They show little interest in getting people served quickly. On a match day it has taken up to 25 minutes to get served. We now buy two rounds at a time now. The staff could do with some lessons from the Gatehouse bar staff who do seem interested in getting you served.
Good news but.........."The Campaign for Real Ale has commended it for the way staff look after the beer and pull pints." - well the beer is kept well but not sure about some of the service. Surprised if The Gatehouse isn't in there.
We do use the Gatehouse and JDs and the beer is usually very good. Spartacus did get a bad pint in the Gatehouse the other week but Wayne thought it was ok and managed to drink it. That's the he first time I've ever seen Spartacus turn his nose up at a pint.
We got a bad pint once in Gatehouse, thing was I'd had that beer the night before and it was excellent, it was bottom of barrel and to be fair we just mentioned to the landlord and he gave us another pint no problem and was very apologetic about it.
The beer is good, and the atmosphere too. The bar staff however are shocking, not one of them can pull a decent pint. A good pint of real ale should be pulled in 2 long swift pulls, with maybe a small third one to top it off. They usually give it 4/5 hard yanks!
As with most books like this (eg. Good food guide) it is not neccessarily the best real ale pubs that get in the book. It is those that are willing to pay for the advertisement.
