I get mine through East Midland trains (even if I'm not using their trains).
Going direct to an operator (any operator) saves the booking fee that the trainline dot com adds on.
Most train companies also do cashback via Quidco (only 1-2% mind).

They are by far the best prices on there. Weirdly booked 2 tickets for that same journey myself yesterday, you off to the fringe festival too?

don't be fooled into thinking you get cheaper seats by shopping around, they are a fixed priced. You can obviously save money by booking in advance and in some cases by splitting your journeys - if the journey requires a change of train say half way through the journey then a lot of the time you can save by buying a ticket to that station, and then from there to your final destination.

If you've got time to keep messing around with different ticket splits you can try buying a ticket to one of the stations where any of the trains you are on stops and then another one from there to your destination. I don't know how they work the prices out but there are a lot of circumstances where the direct ticket can be more than double the price of buying loads of separate journeys but there isn't an easy way to work out how to do it.

I normally use eastcoast.co.uk as it's really quick to update when you try different journey combinations but it doesn't matter where you buy from, the price for the same journey at the same time on the same day doesn't change whether you get it from any website or if you go into a ticket office. Gets me how The Trainline are allowed to infer that they can offer cheaper tickets (they definitely can't) and it must make them a lot of money with the amount of times they advertise on prime-time TV.

 

That never works for me, Motherwell to Barnsley for August 17th is £19, but Motherwell to Carlisle is £7.50 then Carlisle to Leeds £27. On exactly the same trains on the £19 route.

 

Yeah it's not an exact science and a lot of the time it's more farting about than it's worth and to be honest the only time I've ever personally made a saving doing this is on trips to London that weren't bought far in advance and on the slower train from Sheffield.

Direct trains from Leeds to Edinburgh, can usually pick up tickets relatively cheap.

 

It's the county lines where you need to look at splinting.

 

Another option, megabus. They do train and bus tickets.

 

I used them for England vs. Brazil in February, Meadowhell to London for £11.50 return, no complaints from me.
