Anybody know if it's feasible to get a train from Gatwick up t'north to Yorkshire without going through London? Appreciate any help.

    yes

you can get a train down to south coast (Brighton), then pop along past Worthing, maybe to Bournemouth, change there, get on one to Swindon...that can get you to Exeter, where there's a direct service to Leeds (change for Barnsley)

or there MIGHT be a Thameslink train goes direct form Gatwick to Kings X Thameslink, or even onto Luton and change there. But that would still involve that there nasty London.
