Was reading today of some transfers that didn't happen. I never knew Diego Maradona nearly signed for Sheffield United in 1978 and Zinedine Zidane nearly signed for Blackburn once they had won the Premier League. Jack Walker reportedly told Kenny Dalglish Tim Sherwood was better at the time and there was no need for the signing. Is there any ridiculous ones for Barnsley that wasn't just a rumour on that 'certain' website?
Not quite in the same league as the ones you've mentioned, but in Allan Clarke's second stint as manager he was told by the directors to buy Brian Deane from Donny, before his move to Sheff Utd. Clarkey went for a look at him, didn't rate him and told the directors he wasn't good enough to play for Barnsley. He scored 83 goals in 198 appearances in that first spell for the blades, who sold him to Leeds for £2.9 million when that was an awful lot of money (a record sale for Sheff Utd and a record signing for Leeds). He played in the top flight for numerous clubs, had a stint at Benfica, won 3 England caps and ended his career on a total of 195 goals. Martin O'Neil applied for the manager's job. I think it was after Allan Clarke was sacked. He was seriously considered too, but then Machin was sacked by Man City and we went for his experience.
Demba Ba in 2005 was turned away by Davey. David Moyes applied for the job in 1998/99 but wanted to wait till end of season as Preston were in playoffs. Job got offered to Bassett instead.
im sure i remember reading somewhere at the time we were going to sign John Carew but he went to Valencia instead
Allegedly we were after Peter Crouch whilst he was at Aston Villa, on loan with a view to a permanent deal. He was called up to the Villa side because of injuries, scored a few goals and then signed for Southampton. There's the Eric Cantona trial at Sheffield Wednesday too.
During the 1989/90 season Allan Clarke arranged a swap deal which would've meant David Currie joining Sheffield Wednesday, with Steve Whitton & Imre Varadi coming to Barnsley. The chairman at the time, Geoff Buckle, gave his blessing, but the rest of the board turned it down. It led to Clarke being sacked, Buckle resigning and John Dennis taking over as chairman.
The funniest one for me (not reds) was when Wednesday turned Eric Cantona down after 3weeks because they had not seen him on grass!!
Ashley Ward returning was all but sealed, and fell through at the last minute. And how can everyone forget DEAN WINDASS
We were linked with Ian Wright at one point too, in his early days at Crystal Palace. It was around the time we signed David Currie. And we nearly signed Ian Dowie before turning our attention to Ashley Ward. Going back to the Maradona one, he was only very young at the time and was a gamble, so United instead went with the more established Alex Sabella. Sabella was a decent enough player, but...
David Platt.... it was a choice between Platt.. David Currie or Stewart Rimmer... According to John Dennis in his book
There's loads... Man utd and ZZ. Barnsley and John Carew Barnsly and ljundberg Barnsley and Russell lapaty Barnsley and John aloisi
