Just been looking at the two possible routes. At the moment, over the Severn Bridge seems to be the route I'll take. Which route is everyone else going!?
think i might have to go for the M50 route as well then. was toying with the idea of going over the Bridge, but 4 quid 80 to cross is just ridiculas. (perhaps on the way back in celebration of our promotion)
spring bank holiday saturday, I wouldn't venture down to the severn bridge its a reight bottle neck during holiday periods. You will competing with half the country going to devon and cornwall Stick to the M50

Alternatively get off the M5 at Gloucester and.... Follow the dual carriageway from Junct 11 towards Gloucester. Turn right along the A40 for a few miles, then left down the A48. You are over the Severn now. The A48 is a nice, meandering drive, mostly single carriageway all the way to Chepstow. Then you join the M48/M4 on the Welsh side and it is maybe 20 more miles to Cardiff from here. Definitely recommend avoiding the M5 Jct 15/M4 Jct 20 interchange - weight of traffic plus having to pay the bridge toll will slow you down considerably. Nice to come back over the Severn Bridge though, if you fancy the view. If the sun is shining it is spectacular (and free!)
RE: Doesn't that road have a lot of speed cameras on it? Thats what I thought, It did have last time I went down it but that was a couple of years back, nice scenic route though if you have plenty of time.
RE: Doesn't that road have a lot of speed cameras on it? A few, but not excessive. You can't speed on it anyway to be honest. Just suggested it as a break from hammering down the motorway for the entire journey which most of you will be doing from Barnsley. The M5/M50 route is potentially faster but there is a chance of holdups even there seeing as the M50 is (I believe) all two lanes not three. Let's face it, any of the routes to take have hazards and some will look at the map and go for this route or that. Me? Driving to Gloucester station and getting a train - about an hour of hassle free travel direct to Cardiff (maybe!!). No traffic queues in and out of the city. I've driven to Cardiff before and it's not great even on a NON football day.
The M4 definitelty does I was done just before the bridge by a mobile camera last time I drove to Cardiff. They are not the type of cameras you can spot either- so if you do go over the bridge (in or out) don't exceed the speed limit- you will get caught.

RE: Doesn't that road have a lot of speed cameras on it? Is that tunnel an alternative to going over the bridge?
