Remaining solvent and staying in the Championship is a massive achievement for the club. But without some sort of progression attendance numbers will gradually fall.
imho we're heading into a similar period to 1990-1995/6 - unremarkable seasons building towards a stronger club at the end. Probably.
We would all love to be pushing for the play-offs and promotion no doubt about that. But I personally have to say that I don't mind the last two seasons of more stability where we have not been in the bottom three for all that time (expect week one last season). We are not going to go up fast, especially without more backing. I will still be at Oakwell each game and will treat each one as a day out with the lads socialising and 90 mins of football.
Totally agree and was going to put the same re last 2 seasons. Since returning to Championship we have flirted with the play off positions and been in them without the consistency to push on so not all doom and gloom.
Aside from 1990, I don't recall during the 1990's ever feeling that we could get relegated from tier 2. At the start of every season I think I had genuine optimism that we'd have a good season, capable of challenging for the playoffs. Now, at the start of the season I'm looking at the bottom wondering if we can stay up. I'm almost certain I'll be renewing my season ticket for the 18th season (prior to that I was working shifts and went as often as I could) but I'm just not sure how much longer I'll feel like it if we don't progress from being perennial relegation candidates. Maybe it's just me getting grumpier in my middle age!
This always makes me laugh. At the start of every season since we came up, we've been relegation candidates according to the media. Some folk thought we'd already be relegated by now this season. And yet, we've never looked like going down. We didn't last season either. We'll always be one of the smaller clubs in this division, so the media will always write us off, but we're performing far better than anyone expected currently. Someone hit the nail on the head in another post a few days ago. People shout about wanting to be comfortable without fretting over relegation, then get bored halfway through the season when this happens. Happened with Robins, and it's happening again this year.
Based on the fact that the last six years have been nothing like the six years before 1990 I would say it looks very unlikely. As I said, no comparisons. What comparisons are you drawing out of interest?
unremarkable seasons. stability. And I didn't say the last 6 years were the same as the years preceding 1990. So what's that prove ? Come on, you can do it.
It's six seasons since we were promoted. In those six seasons there has been nothing to suggest that we will miss out on the play offs twice in the next few years. So really it will be nowt like 1990-6. It will be more like 2006-12.
Davey`s first full season we started okay and were in and out of play off places for a couple of month then we played Hull on Sky and it started to go downhill after that.
