Got a tree in Back garden was planted by the builders when the houses were built, its about 6 years old now and getting pretty tall. I dont have a problem with it and quite like it but just been round to next door neighbors and its taking over their garden. the roots are growing outwards right across their garden and almost at their next door neighbors fence.

Looks like will have to reluctantly have to cut it down. unless there is a way anyone knows of keeping the roots more confined.

If i do chop it down will I need to remove as much as the root as possible or will chopping the tree down at the base more or less kill it

chop it down as low as you can to the ground, and that's it really, the roots will die,if you want to be really sure , drill some hole in the top of the stump and put some diesel or creosote on it.

I used this in a similar position: http://compare.ebay.co.uk/like/4003...ff11=ICEP3.0.0&ff12=67&ff13=80&ff14=66&ff19=0

It tells you to cut the stump right down and then use a saw to "cross-cut" grooves into which you pour the stump killer. It has to be done on the same day as sap rising from the roots can form a seal to prevent contamination (they're stubborn buggers them trees!).

I found that initially it didn't work. However I then got a sodding huge drill bit, drilled several deep holes into the stub and used twice the recommended amount.

A few moths later the stump was like petrified rubber and just broke to pieces when I put a spade through it.

I'm thinking of nipping over the fence with a few packets and sorting the neighbours god awful confiers!! Why does anyone have them??
