Right then lets try and narrow down this list
    http://www.oddschecker.com/football/...manent-manager
by listing the criteria that needs to be met by potential candidates.

1, First and foremost they need to have knowledge of the lower leagues because thats where they're going to be shopping.
2, because they're only going to be shopping in the bargain bins, the chances are they're going to fail, so we need them to sign on what is now the norm for Barnsley managers the one year rolling contract, so when said failure dose happen they're on a short enough contact so we can afford to pay them off, and start again
3, have the confidence in their own ability to get the best out of the squad and budget we have at the club
4, be desperate enough for a job in football management to take it on knowing the restraints he's going to be under

That's a good description of MM right there.

The Manchester United connections have to have some value and I think we desperately need another new broom, but one who will be able to coach and bring through the youngsters, whilst having the connections to bring in quality players a key positions and, ideally, a recent working knowledge of the championship. You could prioritise those criteria in whatever way you wish. Of the names being touted around, I would consider Mike Phelan top of my list, along wish Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and would not rule out Michael Appleton, especially with his strong connections with our current board. An outside, but possibly exciting prospect might be offering a combination of Butt and Scholes a way into management - with one, or both registered as players, it could give us the energy we need and the player-manager concept worked with Allan Clarke all those years ago. I think that Danny Wilson's name is a 'stalking horse' which might satisfy sentimentalists, but probably not give us the longer-term strategic plan. I would think that MM would be encouraged to apply and take his chances alongside whoever else puts their hat in the ring.

My top touts would be Phelan (if Wigan don't get him first), or Solskjaer, with Appleton a good outsider.

Go on then. Knock me down!

Solskjaer would be my first choice. Not sure about Phelan, but he does have experience at the top as a coach. Hopefully not Appleton.

I would also be happy with Wilson or Holloway or Mellon.

Solskjær won't come to Barnsley. He will only leave Molde for a job in PL.

I would be happy with Appleton, all this about loyalty is nonsense, there's no loyalty in the modern game.

Was expecting you to say you had a big jigsaw of the new manager. Disappointed.

Danny Wilson would have already got it if we would have lost to Brighton on Tuesday night. There would have been a press conference dinner time Wednesday announcing his appointment.

Mellon winning on Tuesday has put the cat amongst the pigeons. If we don't disgrace ourselves at Burnley or pick up a positive result and then beat Yeovil, its his job. Anything other then that, Wilson will be in by Leeds.
