Saw a peterborough fan mention it on twitter about an hour ago. Apparently it's to cause a surge to the grid when everyone turns it back on at the same time... Also (apparently) it worked in Brazil (might have been spain) in 2019..?
will cost the energy companies 9 million quid because that’s how much they make from us every 10 minutes.
Except at the minute aren't they paying more for energy than they can charge due to wholesale prices being higher than the cap so we'd be doing them a favour? Plus I'm not sure how exactly turning stuff that would have been on at that time anyway off and then back on would cause this surge people are on about, and if the power companies know this is happening in advance at a set time then surely they could take the necessary steps to prepare if it did actually have consequences.
10 pm seemed a odd time to pick when a lot of people will already be in bed asleep. They would be better off picking early evening when kids will still be awake but without their electrical appliances on. Go further too by having sandwiches for tea because turning the lights off for ten minutes won't make much difference if you've just had the cooker on ages.
Profits are currently at £9million every 10 minutes. I think this is the first step but I’m not involved in organising but would make sense to move the switch offs to a more impactful time.
Khaled trying to arrange a blackout between 7 and 9 tonight. Or at least, I probably would if I were him.
In terms of causing disruption they'd probably be better just telling everyone to boil a kettle at the same time
