We were exactly the same size club as Bolton Wanderers. Twenty years ago you would have said we were a much bigger club. The difference is that in the intervening years Bolton thought of themselves as a club that wanted to be bigger and weren't afraid to do things with the stadium, with players, with marketing and with fans that showed their ambition to grow away from being a glorified small town WMC. Too many in Barnsley have got a small town, small minded attitude, and that's not a comment on the football club at all so much as the place as a whole. Accept your place in the world and doff your cap to the big misters, because with that attitude we'll always be one of the have nots. Self. Fulfilling. Prophecy.

    Agreed...

Bolton went one way and we went the other.

I think retaining Sam Allardyce as manager through there yoy yo years helped

    whereas Wilson jumped ship

    That's incorrect

Colin Todd managed Bolton when they went up with us and got relegated with us. Todd was sacked and Allerdyce who joined Bolton in 1999 has never been relegated with Bolton. Took them up after beating Preston in the play-offs and they've stayed there ever since. We missed out in the play-offs just one year after Bolton - small margins.

Famous cup finals, Nat Lofthouse, high profile managers and around 70 seasons in the top flight.

What are you basing your assumptions on?

Similar attendances, similar size grounds, same division. The things that would suggest we were similar sized clubs I would have thought.

He said twelve to twenty years ago - you're going back to the 1940s which has little bearing on the modern era

    Correction

I'm wrong as well.Bolton won the play-offs the year after we lost to Ipswich. 2001. and Todd resigned when they lost the 1999 play-offs against Watford. Never let the facts get in the way of a good story. :$

    The past has gone!!!

Stop Blaming John Dennis and partners in crime!! It exactly the same now, the difference is, John knew we didnt have enough clowt for the premier League, not enough money etc. He still took us up and bad tactics took us down, thanks to Danny Wilsons "lets defend on the half way line!!"
We are in my eyes a good club who "could do better" should be on the school report, however.................................... looking at who this 'CLOWN' is trying to bring in with the trialists makes me wonder if he is planning for a season in league 1!!!
We need to speculate to accumulate, Blackpool appear to be doing that with Charlie Adam, we could compeate with them easy for his signature if the board and clown had the balls to think we could challenge for a top 10 or even the fringes of the play-offs.

I think were looking at bottom 6 again next season. Bolton did a good job with going up and down, getting the promotion money and parachute cash too to build a good (Norwegian) team that made them who they are now. Alot can be learned from them and Sunderland (i know they have a big support) but they have done the same.

How long since is it Man City were 3 tier looking down the barrel of the 4th tier????????????????????

A lot of people are quite willing to hark back to the past to justify the current position - "I went to watch 'em play Barrow in 1967 and there were only four people there" as if the 80s and 90's never happened.

Just out of interest, what in your opinion were the mistakes made in 'managing the success?'.

    RE: PS

Promotion - the infrastructure at the club didn't change from the days of 6,000 attendances - we missed out on so much opportunity to bring new investement in, on the pretence of keeping the board/shareholder structure. The old boys club was in full swing.

Relegation from the Prem - appointment of an inexperienced manager on the back of allowing the club captain to leave - cashed in on him.

No plan then put into place for ongoing investment, when the final whistle went at Wembley Basset and the players knew we were fcked.

    In my opinion.

Stand corrected but you know what i mean

They have had far more stable managerial position than we have had, and subsequently it is that which has caused the gulf between us

Just to play Devil's Advocate; I wonder what would've happened had Arsenal not been given the nod over us due to their war efforts?
