We stood toe to toe on a level playing field with Southend United. We played them in March 2019, overcoming being reduced to ten men to overpower them in a 3-0 away win, on our way to promotion from league one. They survived that season - though on goal difference. Fast forward two years, and today we could confirm a place in the playoffs to possibly reach the premier league, whilst Southend could by relegated out of the football league altogether today, their relegation is pretty much confirmed already anyway, Barrow need a point from four games to realistically relegate them as the goal difference is huge. Funny old game.
Have a bit of a soft spot for Southend, so I'll be sad to see them drop out of the league. Had the most incredible bad luck with injuries over the last couple of seasons, but I never expected them to struggle so badly again this season. Hopefully they'll be back soon. Both them and Grimsby used to be solid second tier sides not that long ago.
One of my favourite away days in the last few years. Almost ruined by sky bringing it forward but we had trains booked early enough to get us there. Great performance then back to London on train and an evening out in the west end. What an away day. And I still have a screenshot of me celebrating 3rd goal my wife took of the telly.
Loved Southend I remember skiving college to go to a Friday night game gutted to see them fall out of the football league
Good away day Southend , used to make a weekend of it . Wonder if they still build new ground if they get relegated
That second half was a brilliant display. I remember when Southend were in the championship with us, must be roughly 15 years ago now? They had Freddy Eastwood up front, always liked him for whatever reason.
From time to time I get into a discussion on what league grounds I've visited (had one yesterday with a Derby fan work colleague-he's expecting to expand his ground count next season LoL). In my early days watching barnsley it seems a lot of the grounds I could have "boasted" about visiting have either gone bump altogether or fallen out of the league, Southend and Grimsby seem to be adding to this now. The list includes York City, Chester, Notts County, Southport and Chesterfield (though they had a new stadium anyway). I was thinking it was something I'd done but on reflection, a lot of these were clubs we played as we started to improve in the late seventies then early eighties. I suppose it's a yardstick of us committing to the club and (on the whole) having decent owners
A lot of my early away games were at clubs no longer in the league. Halifax, Hartlepool, Torquay, Stockport, Wrexham, Bradford PA, Darlington as well as those you mentioned.
Remember that game jacob brown was it who was sent off? and Cameron mcgeehan got a ban days later for a alleged stamp on a Southend player.
We played both Yeovil and Southend in the 2nd tier in recent years. Great clubs. As the saying goes, 'there but for the Grace of God....'
Sad to see Southend go, if they do. They took a sharp nosedive that year we were promoted. Hopefully, like many they can bounce back stronger. It took Barrow long enough, they were out of the league before I started watching Barnsley in 74/75, so I'd be equally sad if they dropped out.
It was an incredible performance. To go from 0-0 with 11 men, to 0-3 with 10. Astounding. Stendel was always balls-out attacking. I think he brought a striker on at Southend, even though we were a man down!
Because a Sunderland fan sent the footage to the FA, apparently. It's good that such shîthousery really helped the Marras to haul themselves out of League One, leek, haway, man, woman, man.
Watched on Sky. It was the chuffing commentators harping on about it that made it a bigger deal than it should have been, the Southend player shook his hand.
Forgotten Halifax, not surprised they went out of business. The best view of the match was from the road atop the cliff.
Southend at home was my first game, a 3-1 loss in 1993. I remember they went up as Champions when we won the playoffs under Ritchie. I seem to recall they had a fair few idiots on the old BBC 606 forums. They were also part of our cup run Back in 2008.
