    What's The News

    Welcome to the latest news update from the Supporters Trust.

    [IMG][
    The festive period is now behind us, and it is onward with renewed vigour into 2012. 2011 certainly went out on a high for Barnsley Supporters with a resounding 4-1 victory at Oakwell against Leeds United infront of the highest gate of the season so far. Unfortunately, 2012 did not start in the same way, with a defeat away at Doncaster. 2012 is the 100 year anniversary of the FA Cup victory, and we kick off this years campaign with a home game against Swansea City.

    We are pleased to hear that Barnsley FC are continuing to offer reduced ticket prices for upcoming games with our January fixtures against Derby and Millwall being altered to Category B fixtures. Including these games, any supporters who purchased a 1912 membership card would be have seen all the Category A games for an average of less than £20 a game game.

    Finally, we would like to wish Jacob Butterfield a speedy recovery, after the cruciate ligament injury he suffered early into the game against Leeds.

    Come on you Reds!

    Press and Media Night!

    [IMG]
    Our first meeting of the new year will be the press and media night. We have amassed an excellent panel for this years meeting, including BBC Radio 5 sports journalist Alan Biggs and the new sports editor at the Barnsley Chronicle, Matthew Murray. The meeting has been arranged for Tuesday 10th Janaury at the legends suite and starts at 7.00pm. We hope you can all come along and enjoy what should be an excellent and interesting meeting.
    Full line up of guest speakers.

    • Alan Biggs Radio - 5 Live Sports Journalist
    • Matthew Murray - Barnsley Chronicle Sports Editor
    • Mark Stokes - Head of Media, Barnsley FC
    • Matthew Goodwin - Barnsley FC Journalist
    • Matthew Bailey - Barnsley FC Commentator from Barnsley Player
    • Keith Turner - Sports Photographer
    • David Preece - Budding Journalist and part time goalkeeper
    We will shortly produce the schedule for the meetings up until the end of the season.

    Billy Sharp Rumours;

    We were extremely disappointed to read on Twitter and subsequently in some of the press the false and malicious stories doing the rounds about the behavior of Barnsley Supporters at our game against Doncaster Rovers. Just how the stories started we will never know, but certain people on Twitter decided to launch a campaign discrediting all Barnsley supporters and the football club, accusing the 3,000+ supporters who watched the game of chanting sick comments about Billy Sharp's son. This was completely untrue, but the Daily Mail, not one to miss a story, ran it on their website, which was then picked up by other publications. Supporters of other clubs also joined in the witch hunt, completely ignoring the comments from Doncaster supporters, the press present at the game and Billy Sharp that no chants were heard.

    We are aware of reports that a single individual was responsible for a chant towards Billy Sharp, rather than several fans or a group of fans. Furthermore,we know from sources inside the ground that the person responsible for the chant was immediately silenced by his fellow supporters who were disgusted by his behavior. If anyone can identify this individual, please contact the Supporters Trust or the football club so that an investigation can be conducted and appropriate action can be taken.

    The Supporters Trust are working with Barnsley Football Club to dispel this allegation and clear the name of Barnsley Football Club and its supporters. Over 3000 Barnsley fans attended the game and were well behaved and a credit to the Barnsley Football Club.
    In addition our thoughts are once again with Billy and his family as the mere mention this alleged incident cannot be very pleasant for them to have to deal with

    Update: Following discussions between trust board member, Paul Hicks and the Daily Mail journalist Neil Ashton, the Daily Mail today corrected the news article both online and in the printed newspaper. Well done Paul!!!

    Annual Race Night and End of Season Party;

    The annual end of season race night is provisionally scheduled for Saturday 28th April. So pencil the date in your new diaries now. We will announce more details in due course. Again we will be looking to support Barnsley Hospital Broadcasting, so that they can continue to provide match day commentaries to the patients at the general hospital.

    Home Match Programmes available to a good home;

    Barnsley supporters Don Kirk and his wife Janice have a 10 year collection of Barnsley home programmes, all catalogued and kept by season dating back to the premiership years. The programmes are now looking for a new home, so if anyone is interested, please email Don and Janice here

    I think its 150 and it must get fairly close to that these days, on a Satuday at least. Its never as busy on a Tuesday game but I guess that's down to people getting to the ground from work and having less time.

    I think it's a nice place to go for a drink before the game. Very handy place to meet, has decent beer, reasonably priced and you can get a nice pie and peas etc for about £3.50. Loads of tellys to watch the game before the match. Pop down and have a look!
