Why is it an insult for the club to keep the fee quiet so clubs that have players we are after don't inflate prices?

Re: transfer window closed last night

So clubs in the loan window or next summer or next season won't think "Barnsley said they got three million for Stones and they want a player from us. Lets see how desperate they are to get him when we ask for more than we would have previously"?

I don't think that would happen. Other clubs will surely realise that we haven't a pot to **** in regardless of that fee. Most of it will be 'absorbed' by the club rather than going in a transfer pot. If they do take that stance they will be very disappointed.

I'm not insulted. I've got a general idea what we recieved, and making a fuss about it won't change the figure.

You're going to have to walk me through that one Dreamboy.

Every man and his dog thinks we got £3 million for Stones. The reality is we probably didn't. So we keep quiet about it, other clubs think we got £3 million, when we actually got less, and set their prices accordingly and we end up having to pay more.

Whatever the reason for keeping quiet about the fee, it certainly isn't what you suggested, because in this situation it would harm us not help us.

But that's all ballacks anyway. Every club in the league will know exactly what we paid for Stones if they want to, because they will just ring his agent and ask. His agent wants to keep all clubs sweet so he will tell them. Deals like this are only secret to the public, not to other football clubs.

I don't know why clubs like to keep the value of transfers secret. I can't think of one good reason. It all comes out eventually when the accounts are submitted to companies house. Football men like to keep their dealings secret. It's the same sort of mentality as the secret handshake at the masons. Men will always like to know stuff that other men don't know. It serves no purpose but it makes them feel big.

It's to stop moaning fans saying we should have gone for more, as per several on this board

Fans are saying that anyway. The speculation probably drags the subject out. I think we all know the approx fee but would be interesting to know the add ons. Personally I think it is an ok fee, should have been more, but if the add one make us another million or so it's acceptable. Glad he went to a top club though, hopefully we will get him back in a couple of weeks.
