Just watched One Night In Turin and in the English crowd all the flags are Union Jacks (Union Flags). There's one or two St George Crosses but it's overwhelmingly red, white and blue. Nowadays you'll seldom see a Union Jack, but hundreds of St George Crosses. When did the fashion change? And Chris Waddle had missed that penalty while he was still stood on the half way line. Silly bugger should have said he just wasn't up for it.
I think by Euro 96. Combination of the BNP hijacking the Union flag and a realisation that the England national team is distinct identity from UK, perhaps Scotland also being in our group contributed to that.
The Sun newspaper had a lot to do with it, l think they ran a campaign for the St George flag, car stickers, flags etc and it took off from there. Seems strange now looking back at the Union Jack at matches.
i`m Just a man you see cant multitask.. trying to watch sky, while reading posts and drinking tea...plonker that i am..
I don't see why quite a few people no longer like Union Flag, yeah the BNP use it, but it's the flag of Britain, the flag our armed forces use, we should be proud of it, even if the BNP hi-jacked it.
