Don't know exactly how this could work, but saw in Sheff Star a great idea coming out of our dear neighbours clubs.... both Sheff Utd & Wednesday have joined a scheme to send old replica shirts to children in Africa. The organiser there distributed the shirts in batches to groups of youngsters who then "adopted" that teams name e.g one group in Berending, Gambia has a group of youngsters wearing old Blades replica shirts in their many guises - they have called themselves the "Berending Blades". It would be great to see a similar group all with Reds shirts on. The kids are thrilled with the kits they receive, and it brings the whole community together. The problem is how (where) to collect them & how to get them out there (maybe a sponsor would cover postage costs & get some cracking publicity?) I know Sheffield FC are also doing something similar with their "Boots to Africa" appeal, and they have had loads of coverage esp on Toby Foster show/ Radio Sheffield. The Blades/ Owls sent their shirts to a contact in Gambia - Hamed I Sowe Legal Assistance Essau Town Lower Niumi District NBD Gambia West Africa I'd be happy to sendstart the ball rolling (excuse the pun) - with around 10 Reds/ England shirts that I have at the back of my cupboard. Anyone else interested in getting this off the ground?
yeah ill be in-iv tons of shirts that i never use dunno if i can part with a town one tho.....memories and all that.. donated the old 95/96 inter milan style away kit to a similar thing-regretted it ever since!
Alternatively if we managed to get quite a few shirts we could make our own link with a charity like this:- http://www.compassionafrica.com/home/index.html
Great idea Fired at Work. I am based in East Africa (Dar es Salaam, Tanzania) and so will definitely be able to help with the distribution, should you need a contact to do so. I am a teacher here in an international school and heavliy involved in local football leagues, from Under 9 age range up to Under 18's. The leagues (which our school sponsors) involve children from a variety of backgrounds coming together to play football. This includes local orphanages, organisations that take kids off the street (a major problem here), Tanzanian schools as well as kids from our own school and other independent schools. Many of these teams are on the lookout for kits so any donations are most welcome. Let me know if you need any more info or help from this end and I will endeavour to help out.
I think we could safely say... that if this gets off the ground, there should be some shirts heading your way ... not necessarily up to me though... think we should get site admin to make this a sticky & we'll see what support we get. I'm sure it shouldn't be too hard to sort something out.
SITE ADMIN ??? Any chance of making this a sticky? I'm sure there would be support for this & now we have a Red in Africa with the right contacts.
