So all the Queen wants for her 80th birthday is "a sunny day". Of course, it's easy to say things like that when you've got tens of millions of people paying for anything else you might want . . .
People like you do irritate me! The Queen. Brings more money into this country than she takes out of it. God Save The Queen.
For once I agree with you McDog This country's economy would crash if we ever did get rid of the Monarchy.

"The economy would crash" A bit dramatic! I don't dispute that there is some tourism generated as a result of the monarchy and that they also provide a role as ambassadors but where is your evidence that the "economy would crash"?
Can I ask?? What sets our small little island apart from the rest of Europe in terms of Tourism?
Weather? Nope
History? Yes
History of what? The Monarchy and the commonwealth (british empire)
Who heads the commonwealth? The queen

RE: Can I ask?? Yes but the history would still be there if you removed the monarchy. I'm not suggesting we should get rid of them, I've long since stopped caring about them, I used to really advocate abolishing the monarchy but now I guess they are no better and no worse than having a President as head of state.
People like me? People who hold a view that disagrees with yours on a single subject? You must be very frequently irritated. I never argued for an end to the monarchy (although I might well do so privately), just an end to fawning media coverage.
And who asked her the question? If it was Charles then I'm sure she'd have asked for a nice momento, something personal. However I suspect this was asked by the media, so I suspect saying you'd like a sunny day is a reasonable comment to a media that would jump on and dissect any answer that was given….she'd have been roundly criticised if she said she wanted a diamond necklace or a Lear jet or something - besides whch, she probably had to be careful not to say anything that any company could actually provide her with as they'd use it as a marketing opportunity…..I'm surprised that Thomas Cook haven't offered her a fortnight in Benidorm!
Yes the history would be still there but for how long?
Without a monarchy how much would tax payers want to spend on the upkeep of empty buildings that are national treasures.
You see it already with empty Palaces going to rack and ruin that have been left derilict with no public money to pay for the upkeep.

On seconds thoughts, scratch that Line them up against the wall and shoot them. Sod the money, what about the social injustice?
Bloody Hell ! Always waiting to have a pop some people.
And if she'd asked for summat materialistic she'd have been railed for wanting more.
Leave the lass alone - she can't win.
One thing's for sure - this is a far more stable country for having her, than it would be if we hadn't.
There - that should just about push the deluge button in the right place.

Not sure how having the Queen keeps the country stable? Her ilk and her mother were invloved in potentialtwo planned military coup in the seventies. Apparently
Happy Birthday, I'm sure... all the best and all that, but why I should be bowing to a woman who means nothing to me is slightly beyond me. Best thing the French ever did...
Is it her actual birthday today, or what? I always thought she has two birthday's, one official and one real?
Is it her actual birthday today, or what? I always thought she has two birthday's, one official and one real?
