RE: Check if you have a connection for an external VGA i do but it doesn't pick up the monitor / other laptop ??
Get yersen to Maplin Buy a 2,5 inch enclosure for the HD which will then go via USB or firewire, Then get off what you want. Just make sure you tell them what you want it for, then when you have done you still have the workign external HD you can format for storage.
I can;t think of a way that you could use that does not need a screen to see The set up..... Have you tried looking in the BIOS to see if there's a setting for turning on the external VGA port
RE: I can;t think of a way that you could use that does not need a screen to see how would i do that? no screen to look at or am i missing something?
Couple of questions 1. When you say it boots up, do you get the Windows startup noise or is it just the fans that start up?
2. You say when you try to connect via VGA it doesn't pick up the monitor/other laptop. Do you have a monitor from a desktop PC or have you only tried connecting to the other laptop with a VGA lead to try and use its screen?

RE: Couple of questions 1. just the fan noise, but the hd light flickers 2. i have connected via VGA cable to a monitor & then using the same lead my other laptop
I've got a similar problem with an old laptop. It won't switch on at all so I've taken then laptop apart (or I've taken most of the laptop apart ... waiting for the right screwdriver to take the final part off), and then I bought a converter as has been mentioned above to get the data off the drive.
RE: Couple of questions Urgh. Sounds like the whole thing isn't booting at all.
If it were just your screen, you should get the Windows noise when it's been running a minute.
First thing I'd do is take the memory out and reseat it. It works surprisingly often.
After that it's back to Jax's USB conversion idea.

what is this converter then, please explain a little more so I know what I'm asking for. much appreciated dan
Its a metal box that houses the hard drive,, 2.5 inch not 3,5 Go into the shop down by Pizza Hut and tell them they wil make sure you get the right one,
No. That is for desktop IDE devices. This looks more like it http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=44932&criteria=2.5
check that you have not swicthed it to a diifferent output on the keyboard you have an Fn key - and some blue F numbers. Think it will be F4 or F3 - if you press the Fn key then one of those see if it fetches it on (with laptopn running obviously). The blue picture on the keyboard should look like a tv.
