A very, very defensive line-up. I would like to see us using a similar system away from home but at home, especially against Southend, we could do with Howard, Kyel Reid and Disco having a go at them. Wallwork - I thought that he started a little slow but improved as the match went on and looked a composed player who can spread the play nicely and defend the back four. McCann - Scored but looked more of a central than wide player to me. Did OK overall but from what I saw he isn't going to be our saviour! Knight - We all know he has pace so why the hell the ball wasn't played for him to run on to bewildered me. Can't play with his back to goal so we shouldn't try to. Given the service this lad could grab a few goals. Reid - Looked pacey and could be very useful. It all depends on how defensive a line up we will go for in future matches. Squad - 2 extra players gives us more options tactically and that could prove crucial rather than attack, attack, attack
Like to see Hayes up front rather than on the wing. People been calling for Nardi, but got his chance Saturday and just didnt look interested. Not nice football to watch, but sick of playing great and feeling **** when we lose.
I think a lot was to do with the, shall we say "no-nonsense" approach we adopted. The ball was continually in the air making it difficult for Knight and Nads. Agree he was poor in parts though as were Hayes and Hecko The result was all that was ever going to matter on Saturday. We were desperate for any kind of win.
We got it But I don't think we played as though we were desperate for a win. We played to try and prevent Ipswich from scoring and did that (a minor miracle in terms of this season). We then nicked it at the end. The tactic is a good one as long as we do nick a few wins. We are relying on teams being worse than us rather than us trying to be better than them (if can understand that logic - I mean gambling on mistakes rather than creativity).
Ipswich were pants didnt think either Nads or Knight have the work rate to play together. Neither one looked prepared to run onto balls unless they were with a yards of them
I was wondering that too. It could so easily have been a dire nil nil draw. I think any judgement needs to be reserved for a few games.
RE: Ipswich were pants Nardiello was shocking, I know he is lazy at the best of times, but that was the worst I've ever seen him. He didn't look interested in moving unless the ball was straight to him. I thought with Ritchie going, and him getting a chance in the team he would have put some effort in. But no. Knight did ok, and to say he's only 4 foot tall, he does very well in the air. Probably won more balls than our normal target man. Even if he doesn't get the ball, he makes sure the defender doesn't get a decent clearance on it. We just didn't play to his strength's, we need to play the ball in behind them, get him using his pace more.
RE: I was wondering that too. It could so easily have been a dire Under present circumstances, a 0-0 draw would still have been a good result on Saturday. It seemed to me that the plan was not to lose and anything better than that was an acceptable bonus. No it wasn't exciting football, well not until the last few minutes anyway but it was effective and IMHO, everything went to plan. IMHO, Simon Davey made more tactical sense in one game, than Ritchie managed in 18 months.
RE: You thought a 1-0 victory at home showed more tactical awareness than winning a promotion? Do you really think that promotion was achieved by Ritchie's tactical awareness> Jeez!!
