If you found a keeper that combined Collins' ability to sweep up, with Walton's shot stopping ability, you'd have one hell of a keeper.
10 clean sheets in his 22 games this season. Top keeper at this level and one of the most likely in our squad to make a step up if we got promoted.
In all my years of watching Barnsley, I've never known us to have two young goalkeepers as talented as Collins & Walton battling each other for the jersey. We've had better goalkeepers, but they've been far more experienced. I have yet to see any perfect goalkeeper play for Barnsley, or any other position in the team for that matter.
The perfect goalkeeper doesn't exist. Even the greatest of all time made mistakes. It comes with the territory, the last line of defence, make a mistake and invariably it's a goal. Further up the pitch, make a mistake and some of the time it can be rectified
Also, with some fans, they'll use mistakes to justify criticism of a goalkeeper they don't like/rate, but conveniently ignore or fail to acknowledge errors their particular favourite makes. As I posted earlier, I believe Collins & Walton are the best two young goalkeepers we've had at the club at the same time. They'll be more than aware that there's areas of their game they have to improve. At such a young age, I'd be gobsmacked if they DIDN'T have flaws. The same as everyone else in every profession.
Exactly mate. Everyone has got areas to work on I'm just loving the improvement in everyone this season
I used to try to explain this to Hemsie, when he went on his irrational Luke Steele rants. There are so many essential strengths, that are rarely complete in one player. Heinz Muller is the only BFC goalie I have seen who comes close. We have had some good uns, it’s sad we didn’t get to see how far Dave Watson could have gone. An England call up was whispered at the time, 98/9.? I agree mate, we have a couple of great young keepers, who play to Val’s system very well.
Just putting it out there, Brad still getting stick in certain quarters but this season shows he is able to do what he was brought in to do
No. As the technique develops to it logical end he will be so far up the field he need to perfect HIS shots on target!
I went to school with Dave Watson, was chuffed for him getting England U21 caps and it looked like a senior England cap would follow naturally. If I recall correctly it was against Norwich he got injured and never came back from it. Sobering reminder how a footballer's career can be over just when they're reaching their prime.
