Stick with that formation and we will cause a lot of teams problems! Really hope holgate stays for at least another season because on today's performance he can make that spot his own. Conor wilkinson very impressive when he came on, young George smith improved massively today, hopefully a bit of confidence today will do wonders for the lad! LJ has got a massive headache selecting a midfield from that lot, but a good headache to have nonetheless! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Ageed. Holgate, Smith, Ny all bossed it. They all did in fact. Still not convinced about Watkins though. George's been practising his corners methinks. Hudders are going to struggle this year based on that lot, some good players, but created little.
Can't see Watkins starting, nothing against him just on the bases of what I've seen winnall and wilkinson will be the two up top, unless LJ brings someone else in who he fancies. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Watkins made some good runs, held it up well and didnt lose it. Him & Winnall link up really well just as Wilkinson & Jackson linked up well. Looking forward to the season starting based on that.
And all of a sudden we have depth and options, feeling very optimistic for this season! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
we do! Unless Rothwell is injured like someone stated, a striker or two and we have some competition up front as well as midfield. don't know what people are moaning about
Thought Roberts had a better second half. All in all I thought we played well. Apart from Wells' individual goal I thought we kept him at bay. He's always played well against us. Looking forward to the Chesterfield game.
First time I've seen us since Stalybridge. We looked much better. Massive positive with Holgate back in the side. Hopefully we're getting close to convincing him to stay. Crowley also impressed, he has unbelievable technique and close ball control. Admittedly, I'm still not convinced by George Smith.
I hope by making him feel welcome he'll change his mind and sign a contract, then next season or January after having proper development he can get his big move. Everton would be a good place for him to go, He'll know Stones ( i think ) and they have a good academy.
I think Watkins will start. Hasn't been a stand out player but links midfield to attack well, never gave a ball away and is a good partner and foil for Winnall. I'm assuming though we play this formation. I think the hardest bit is where Hourihane will fit in.
*!Warning potential happy clapper post!* But after an afternoon out at Oakwell I can't help but feel a little more optimistic. I'm still not sure whether this team is good enough for the top 6, but it's obvious that the team isn't finished. If we can keep those players who played today, or were on the bench fit, then we have a good side. I was impressed with Mawson, who looks an absolute class player. Watkins was busy and Wilkinson made a difference when he came on; he offered that bit of presence up front that we were missing before his introduction. I'm still not sold on the formation. Or if we are going to persist with a diamond, we at least need to play full backs who can do the work for 2 down the wings. Holgate looks that sort of player. Smith not so much. If we're going to play the diamond, we need a left full back who can play in that role. This isn't a dig at Smith, more an observation about his style of play. That aside, it worked very well in the 2nd half when Wilkinson and Jackson came on. The build up play for a chance where Jackson hit the bar was absolutely sublime. It was started off by a good interception by Digby in the middle, who played in Scowen. He found a gap through to Jackson, who played a quick one two with Wilkinson to get in behind, and rattled a shot off the cross bar. Simeon Jackson- I read earlier that we'll only sign him in the event that we don't get either of the two strikers that we've bid for. He showed glimpses today of the quality he had when he was at Gillingham and Norwich and I reckon he could do a job even if only off the bench. He linked up well with Wilkinson in the second half and was unlucky not to score. We need to bear in mind that other than the Boro game, we've not lost a friendly. You also need to bear in mind that we only lost 3 times under Lee Johnson last season. We seem to have bolstered up the back line in pre season. I think Johnson has made us a difficult team to break down. We just need a little more creativity going forward and I think we will roll teams over in this league. I certainly think we'll lose less games this season. Whether we'll win any more is another matter entirely, but as my opening statement said, I feel much better about the season ahead now I have seen the team play first hand. Maybe he was trying to put himself in the shop window, but I thought his attitude was excellent. To put in such a good performance and put in the effort which he did was commendable. He could just have not been bothered and tried to avoid getting injured. And looked very happy when he scored
It was the one thing that I noticed was that he looked absolutely ecstatic when he scored. Considering it was a friendly, he looked as though he'd just scored the winner in the champions league final. He looked to enjoy himself this afternoon which was fantastic to see considering he could well have moved on by now had circumstances been a little different. Sent from my SM-G900F using Tapatalk
Very enjoyable friendly, I thought every lad looked comfortable on the ball & played well. Our four strikers certainly caused their defenders more problems than theirs did ours. A special mention for Marc Roberts, though. After being turned for their goal, he was excellent alongside Mawson and Nyatanga, culminating in an impressive clearance near the end from a Huddersfield free kick. I've been looking forward to the start of the season all Summer. After getting a glimpse of Crowley's sublime skills today and taking into account our starting line up was missing Hourihane, Rothwell & Williams, that feeling has only been strengthened.
3 4 1 2 Crowley showed touches of sheer genius. He is a real talent. At times his touch and passing was sublime. If we can fit him he will boss the hole behind the front two. 17 and you can see the quality.
