He had to go because he couldn't do his job defensively at corners. The main thing you expect from your striker.
Regarding Payne I'm of the opinion that I wouldn't have been against him staying, but I can also see why we let him go. He's certainly in a much better place as a footballer now than he would have been sitting on the bench, playing the odd 20 minutes for us The main question I'd ask regarding him is: would he have offered anything we don't have now? Perhaps he would, being someone who can hold the ball up well, but I believe Thiam can do the same thing if the service is right (and it would have to be for Payne); or perhaps he's too similar too Thiam, just slightly taller, but less skilful. Maybe we were too hasty, but I don't think it will have a great impact on our season regardless, but it has had a great impact on Shrewsbury's!
Re Payne he looked out his depth whenever he played for us. Glad to see he’s found a club and getting some success.
If we're talking about relegation to Lg One... then yes we were hasty in getting rid of Stefan Payne. But he wasnt proved in the Champship was he, and even if it was our own fault for not giving him a chance, I dont regret us selling him to be honest.
As others have said, I am happy that Payne is having some success at Shrewsbury, albeit at a lower level. However, success at a lower level is not how we need to judge a player. We need to judge a player on whether he has the attributes, or at least the potential attributes required at our level. At our level, it is not enough to be big and strong. To be a success, forwards must have pace and movement because without these qualities a player cannot find space, and the ability to find space is far more important than size in the modern game. From my observations of Payne, these were two qualities that he did not possess and as such, we were right to let him go so that he could find his level. It is often said that we need a big man to make this system or that system work, as though knocking long balls to an isolated big man would work, when knocking long balls to an isolated medium sized man does not. The people who say this are wrong. It is a view of football that comes from a different age. It is a view of football that has been left behind by the modern game. The modern game is all about control of possession in mid-field. It is all about movement and accuracy of pass. It is all about midfield players being in control of the game, reading the game and being in the right place to dominate how the game is played and the pace that the game is played at. The job of the front player(s) is to make sure their movement makes them available for a pass for as much of the time as possible. If you do not believe me, just count how many of our opponents play with a lumbering centre forward these days, or play long balls up to a centre forward hoping that he might get a knock on. When any team does that, it is simply a way of relieving pressure on their defence and the team is hoping for a better chance of clearing with control when the ball is returned.
As usual, a post as gone off on a tangent. I merely said I would prefer to have kept stefan Payne than the player mentioned at the top of the thread. Ones a striker that hasn't scored any goals anywhere.
