When I turn the ignition to start the car it sometimes feels very sluggish although the car does start every time.
Is this a sign that something is wearing out and needs replacing?
(What goes on under the bonnet is a mystery to me)
    Thanks.

My girlfriends car was doing that and not long after the head gasket went she's got a fiat though so might be totally different as I know very little about cars!

Do you make a lot of short journeys? Sounds like the battery could do with a good charge. It's always worse in cold weather.

thanks, it's petrol and I do make a lot of short journeys. I'll give it a good run to charge up the battery and check if the same thing happens again.

Could be starter motor. You have not given model or age of car. Get on from scrappers

Also make sure you dip the clutch when you're starting the car. It's a little less work for the battery.

Pretty straightforward,Starter motor packing up(least likely)..or Battery failing..or possibly Alternator not charging to the required degree,
if you have a multimeter (or a mate who has)check the battery voltage(should be 12v ish) start the car and check again(should be charging at 14vplus..to get over the batteries natural resistance)if it;s less than 14v you need a new alternator,if it is 14vplus ..probably a new battery. Alternatively if you're around Hoyland way,nip it in to the garage on Cobcar St,and they'll test it out FOC.

If its the battery then you'll be looking at a decent charge for the work! ;-)

Which petrol engine is it? Some VAG engines have multiple coil packs and they are prone to fail. When did you last have the spark plugs & air filter changed?
