Want to spped up your laptop and i mean REALLY speed it up.

    Just put an SSD drive in as the laptop was slowing down and I had no chance of buying a new one, so got a SSD Ok so you have to sacrifice capacity but its now blisteringly fast . boots up in a fraction of time and programmes start instantly best is browsing is way way way faster. Cloned the system over with ease.

    Got a 512gb ssd in my MacBook Pro, normal hard drives are geriatric in comparison, it's like night and day the difference. Macbook boots up totally in under 15 secs and shuts down in four. Amazing!!!

    If you have room in your case, I strongly recommend putting your Operating system on an SSD, and having a large HDD (1 or 2 TB) as storage - well worth it

    Can they be fitted to all laptops and pc's and then do they automatically set themselves as the main drive? TIA

    It all depends of you have room in your case and if you have a port available on your motherboard. So no, they can't be fitted to all. To set it as your main drive you basically have to put an operating system on it and boot to said OS on that drive, fairly simple to do, and should be auto selected based on the numbers next to the SATA ports on your motherboard. you may need to buy your OS again, or you can clone your current drive if it's small enough (you may need to backup any data that takes it over the size of the SSD otherwise).

    My laptop only has one sata port, so to put a ssd in at same capacity 500gb would be over £250.

    would rather put a 1tb Hdd in my current i5 laptop and increase capacity. I need more not less.

    I never turn off my laptop anyway so dont really care how fast it starts up and shuts down. I dont have a problem how quick a program loads up, not s if I need to go make a cup off coffee while waiting for word to start.

    not saying there not better, just Ill wait until they are more affordable, without having to lose hd size

    yeah made a big difference to an old laptop of mine.

    Just don't fall into the trap that thinking because there are no moving parts that they are more reliable. If they fail there is a good chance its hasta la vista data. Always keep those backups going.

    Their performance also degrades over time. Every time a sector is written to it degrades. Thats why its a good idea to configure the OS properly with them. Windows 7/8 already have optimisations to look for SSD's but if you are using XP make sure you go through and disable stuff like indexing. There are guides on the net to show you what to change. Without doing this you will degrade the drive faster and because of the different ways the SSD works you dont need stuff like windows indexing.

    Ive alredy had one dead SSD but luckily it died as soon as i had put the OS on (rather than 6 months down the line). Took me 2 re-installs to suss there was an issue though. Thought i had mucked something up with the install. As soon as the laptop rebooted it corrupted the OS.

    Overall though i would put one in every laptop now. Ideally a laptop with a couple of drives so you can have one for the OS and one for data files. This Dell precision has got that - you can also if you want RAID it up with 2 x SSD.

    Ssd = Solid state drive? In other words its like a giant memory stick instead of you normal hard drive (hdd) that has moving parts.

    Raid is a back up system

    Gb/tb gigabytes and terabytes (disk size)

    Sata. Id basically a port you connect yhe drives to the motherboard

    Any others?

    RAID isnt really a backup system, although it can be used as such. It's more the way that multiple hard drives are organised by the computer.
