Ward gone to Sheff Utd for £330,000

Discussion in 'Bulletin Board ARCHIVE' started by Gloucester_Red, Jan 19, 2009.

  1. Hmm, so why were we going to pay £400,000? One for the future according to Blackwell. Good luck to the lad but will be surprised if he does anything at this level

Do you know what we offered?

the exact details? are the details reported about the blunts deal correct??

    Probably not.

Have the blunts got more money than us?

Are they better positioned to take the risk?

    Certainly.

effectively screwed this club by engineering his move to the blunts. Declined talks with other clubs.

One horse race and all that.

And our £400k 'deal' was inclusive of add ons and sell on clauses so I suspect the core valuations were pretty similar, if truth be told.

In black & white, yes. But consider that both were out of contract at the end of this season. Howard would have gone for nothing being over 24, but Ward would still have commanded a fee, even if only by tribunal. I think that is the difference mate.

I think he'll do pretty well for Sheffield United, and would've done well for us.

    However, time will tell.

so realisitcally, how much would you have gifven Ward as a basic wage

If davey had given him 10k a week and it didnt work out he would have lost his job and left the club in a bad position. He made the correct decision for the club. We can not afford to take the gamble, they can.

Seems some people on here will pick fault at Davey no matter what he does.

For what its worth I think Ward will do well.

Well if Davey thinks he is good enough for the Championship then the lad should have a wage that reflects that,£3,000 a week?

from what i can make out from my 'sources within a club' down here he was offered around 3.5 a week plus various bonus's. He wanted closer to 6 a week basic. Now how true that is is a different matter.

JCR realised the club couldn't risk a large wage on an untried player at this level, no matter how much Davey rates them. As soon as he impressed he was rewarded with a new contract and a pay rise.

Seems a good way to do business to me.

If he does well for United

Davey will be hung out to dry for not signing him. If he flops Davey will still be castigated for wanting to sign him in the first place. It's fantastic ammunition for your average Davey hater and pretty much a lose/lose situation for our manager.

it is but what some people are still failing to realise is, this club cannot compete with clubs like sheff utd, birmingham, Nottingham Forest infact all but a few of the clubs in the championship with regards to wages and club stature. The fact not so long ago this club that we all claim to support thick and thin was only hours from going BACK into administration for paying bigger than standard wages to staff inside the club set up and cannot afford to make the same mistake again as i dont think Mr cryne will underwrite the cheque.
I understand that you have to take risks and gambles but that should remain inside the wage budget set by the clubs peers. Barnsley Football club cannot afford to run the risk of paying young unproven players upwards of 6k a week on a long term contract on the chance they will be a success.
There will be at least one championship side and possibly a current premiership side in administration within the next 12 months. Those who play within the means will prosper.
