edit: sorry, didn't know it had already been posted From BBC.co.uk "Warnock decides to stay at Blades Warnock was the Portsmouth chairman's first choice Sheffield United boss Neil Warnock has decided to stay at Bramall Lane despite interest from Portsmouth. Warnock was given permission to speak to Pompey, but Blades' chairman Kevin McCabe announced: "We are delighted Neil Warnock's future remains here. "I have been able to show Neil - and he has recognised - he has a key role in shaping our quest for the top flight." Pompey could now turn to Rangers' boss Alex McLeish or even consider a shock move for ex-manager Harry Redknapp. Rangers turned down an initial approach for under-pressure McLeish, whose side face a vital Champions League game against Inter Milan on Tuesday. But Pompey chairman Milan Mandaric told the Daily Record: "I'll probably go back to Rangers on Friday. Mandaric has not made an approach for Harry Redknapp and there is no sign of one Southampton chairman Rupert Lowe "I don't think there is much we can accomplish by going straight back to them when we realise they have such a big game coming up next week. "We will only complicate matters and it will be next week before we are ready to make a decision ourselves. "It make more sense to ask Rangers if they would grant us permission to speak to Alex after the game against Inter Milan." Redknapp left Portsmouth just over a year ago, and controversially took over as manager of south-coast rivals Southampton shortly after. However, Redknapp and Mandaric have since settled their differences, although Saints chairman Rupert Lowe maintains he has had no contact with Pompey. "Mandaric has not made an approach and there is no sign of one," he said. "It could not get off the ground without me being informed, and that has not happened." Time to open talks with George Burley, I hope From R Have your say on TMS Mandaric has had a request to talk to Crystal Palace boss Iain Dowie rejected as he seeks a replacement for sacked Frenchman Alain Perrin. Warnock was widely expected to take up the position, and earlier on Thursday Blades' defender Craig Short admitted the players did not expect him to be in charge for Saturday's derby against Sheffield Wednesday. PLC chairman McCabe said he was relieved to keep Warnock. "I wish the Portsmouth saga had not started but in the end the outcome demonstrates the importance of the relationship between a chairman and his manager," McCabe said in a statement on the Blades' website. Warnock has been at the club for six years and has overseen a promising start to their promotion push but his contract ends in June and he is still waiting on a new one."
I can't believe anyone thought he would ever leave. Why on earth he'd leave the club he loves in the position they're in is beyond belief. Think about it... if you were Barnsley manager in a very strong position for promotion to the division above, would you leave for a struggling club in the division below that you have no affection for? It would also mean uprooting all his family. I'm amazed how he was ever the bookies' favourite for the job.
if you were offered 3 times as much money for same job... ...as you are in now would you leave? or would you be "loyal"
RE: if you were offered 3 times as much money for same job... Completely different example. I'm not a 'fan' of my company and am therefore not in anything like the situation Warnock's in. The actual situation is: A very very well off person is in charge of the football club he loves and has loved for all his life, and is very likely to become a hero at Bramall Lane for leading them into the Premiership. If I was very well off and was in charge of Barnsley in an identical situation as Sheffield United are now and was offered that job at Pompey on 3 times the wages, no I wouldn't leave.
disagree... ...loyalty is way over hyped these days. warnock has never said he wouldn't go out of loyalty...it was "politics".
Disagree So are not a loyal Barnsley fan then? Are you going to swap teams at some point? The loyalty I'm talking about is that he is a Sheffield United fan. I'm not saying for example that Paul Sturrock wouldn't leave Sheffield Wednesday as he's a 'loyal manager', because he's not a Wednesday fan as far as I'm aware. An example of fan loyalty was Marcus Stewart dropping down two divisions to play for Bristol City despite being offered deals at Championship clubs.
yes i am a barnsley fan and i will never change teams however us fans are full of "loyalty" that we expect from our managers and players. this sometimes doesn't happen. football is about money...yes i agree with your point about not being loyal to your company but football clubs these days are just that. companies. you only get so long in the game and you need to make as much as possible from it...imho. plus like i said warnock hasn't gone because of politics...not love of the club. that may have been a factor in his decision granted but i honestly don't think it was the deciding factor.
RE: yes i am a barnsley fan It's probably also because he will probably have the chance to manage his team in the Premiership next season. If they were struggling and he was offered a job at say a bigger club like Newcastle who had a chance of European football in the future, it might have been a different matter. My initial post about me not thinking he would go was based on the overall situation of the two clubs, combined with the fact he's a United fan. To be honest, if I was Reading manager without any loyalty to them at the moment I'd probably not leave for Pompey, though I guess if the money was enough... but the loyalty if it was Barnsley would swing it. At the end of the day, everyone's different, but I just never thought he'd go. Just to clarify, I'm not saying you're wrong or anything and I understand your point about lack of loyalty in football these days.
i thought the money would swing it... ...but maybe he's used that to get himself a new contract at brammal lane. portsmouth could be quite possibly the worst club to go to at the moment....they have nothing to work with at all and he probably realised he's **** anyway so he wouldn't be able to hack it. nice discussion journo
RE: i thought the money would swing it... Indeed mate. Just a point - if he was offered the Newcastle job for example, I think he'd go. I considered his loyalty, where Sheff Utd are, and where Portsmouth are in my reasoning.
RE: i thought the money would swing it... I would have a bet on Pompey going down-they are in turmoil and no sane manager would go there while Madman Mandaric is in charge-Joe Jordan will take them down
