Never bought an extended warranty before as i beleive they are complete rip offs. Had a wasking machine that went 13 year before it started playing up. However, now realise that washing machines are more electronic than mechanic and prob not as robust, and electronic components are pricey. The washer i have doesnt get great reviews (£350 hotpoint), so am thinking of getting a further 4 years extended warranty. Have two options - DSG (Dixons etc - whom i bought it off) at £168, or Hotpoint direct at £188. Both have similar cover. Does anyone have any success or horror stories regarding extended warranties with either of these companies, or any other companies doing extended warranty TIA
I always steered clear of extended warranties on individual products, not because I thought they were rip offs as such, but quite costly in the long run. I used to insure several electrical items with British gas for a monthly sum, eg Fridge, Washer, cooker etc. Began to realise that most of the time I was paying out more than I ever got back. Now I don't bother. Most appliances seem to last well out of warranty. If they don't then I just have to buy another. It's up to you. Nobody can really say for sure which is best. However, Washers can be dodgy simply because of all the moving parts and the involvement of loads of water. Look at it this way. Your washer costs £350. £180 a year is half the original cost. If you save £16 a month for the first 12 months you've amassed well over half of what it cost you by the time the guarantee is up. By year 2 you've got enough to buy a new one if it conks out early. After year 2 you are quids in. But if you want eternal peace of mind, and quick repair without having to get round to the shop again, extended warranty is good Just my opinion like, and of course is dependant on your financial circumstances.
original post may have been a little misleading. The price was for the full 4 years extended warranty i.e approx £45 per year
