and a lot of people were booing him before the fight started. Really can't understand it. Whenever I've seen him in the media etc he seems an excellent role model and someone who genuinely unites communities and does a lot of charity work. And he was awesome last night. There will always be that doubt about his chin but last night he was so quick and snappy, quick combos in and out so he didn't get chance to get hit
excellent role model by doing 140 mph in his BMW up the M62, then subsequently failing to turn up at court. When he did turn up he was proven guilty beyond reasonable doubt, but then told the media outside 'there was no way I was doing 140 mph'. He looked much improved last night, but a role model he aint.
good point Have to admit I had forgotten about that, but I'm not sure thats a reason for the negitivity that people in general have for him, as plenty off people are happy to cheer on other people who have lost their licence for speeding (which i don't condone) who haven't done half the things Khan has done
RE: good point another good point. Just surprises me the level of vitriol he seems to attract. bar the incident you reminded me of (which does undermine my point!) I always think he comes across very well. far more boxers who deserve to be disliked, just wonder if we've been spoilt by our two best boxers being calzaghe and Hatton who have been so impressive inside and outside the ring?
Hats off to him, he put in a very good performance last night. He was just too big for Barrera (who really did look poor). Picked him off. I would liked to have seen Barrera catch him just once to see how he would have taken it, but he didn't so that doubt is still there. But if he can keep his defence like it was last night he might not get caught with many clean shots. I can't understand the booing either, he hasn't really done anything to deserve that. Wasn't surprised though, when he was knocked down by Prescott I was watching in a pub and the place errupted. All sorts of things being shouted. You would have thought that a live event would be packed with his fans though, at times it was like Barrera's homecoming.
RE: good point Bruno, Benn, Naz and Eubank before them too. Been some great characters in British boxing.
I met Henry a couple of times He came from a family of travellers based around the Leeds to York area. A very good fighter and an extremely nice fella.
A lot of people love Barrera because he's a working class hero and a great professional. Khan has made himself look like a play boy and like he has been carefully managed to get an easy ride (prior to Prescott he fought some ridiculous opponents). When he got chinned against Prescott, a lot of people wanted to see him take it.
Barrera hit him with w2 lovely shots after second one Khan lifted his arms and just laughed. Very good performance from Khan.
Bit of a legend round York where i live One of my mate's came home from work one day to find him in his kitchen. Turns out his landlord had got him to do some tiling. My mate crapped himself at first finding henry Wharton randomly stood in his house! But said he was a really nice bloke once they got chatting
RE: Bit of a legend round York where i live I lived in York a few years. My mate nearly got run over on Toft Green by Wharton in that covertable blue BMW M3 he drives. The car stopped and mate started to take an issue until he saw the black spikey hair get out of the drivers seat and then backed off apologetically
Don't get my wrong, Berrera is one of my all time favourite boxers, and its sad to see the shadow of the man boxing last night, but was still cheering Khan all the way. Don't see the prblem with him being eased in to things. Was watching some of Hamed's early fights the other week and he was fighting blokes who'd never won a fight. I also have a lot of admiration for the way Khan has gone to america to Freddie Roach. Think that it is a very wise decision from a young head
RE: Barrera hit him with w2 lovely shots That's just not true. lol Khan did some show boating, but that just shows that they'll never get him to focus properly. He never took a proper shot from Barrera, he got a brush with one of two that threatened something more, and his eyes widened for them, but he'll never convince me he has anything like a chin. I never liked Naseem Hamed very much, but he had a chin.
Do you not think that a little strange though? He is representing Britain. I know Barrera is a likeable fella but he was up against a lad from Bolton. I don't see the management of his career as a reason to dislike him either. I know what you mean about his 'play boy' image, but that is just media stuff. I see him more of a boy racer due to his driving antics. But he seems like a decent enough lad otherwise.
Naseem fought some poor guys: Said Lawal was pathetic. Robinson was hardly the best world champ to take a title off (that being said, when he was young, fit and still with Brendan Ingle, Hamed was quite outrageously talented). I don't credit Khan with the move to the U.S. - I think he got told what was happening.
Naz got floored as many times as Khan has been Remember the Kevin Kelley fight at Madison Square Gardens? They took it in turns to knock each other over.
Yeah, it is strange. Driving stuff to one side, he actually seems to be a nice lad and he did really well in the olympics (when everyone loved him). It's a bit harsh to start booing him.
