Peter Cech (supposedly one of best in the world) on four occasions had to deal with ball in air in the six yard box. Once he attempted to clear with his hand and messed up in a crowd of players, two occasions he left it for the defence to deal with while staying on his line and only once did he make it his by punching the ball. Watching other keepers many do tend to stay on their lines. James and Schmeichel tended to wander out more but majority i reckon waited and let their defenders deal with it even with curling crosses into the six yard box. So are all those who are convinced that a goalkeeper should claim everything coming into their area still convinced? I reckon its personal choice of the keeper who has just a moment to make a decision.
McCarthy - you are either Nick Colgan ........ .... or part of his family, or one of his mates because you defend him far too vigourously! Coming for a cross or staying on the line is obviously down to the goalkeepers judgement and occasionally they all get it wrong, whether that be staying put or coming off the line for something they shouldn't have. The best goalkeepers make less errors of judgement than the others. The trouble with Colgan is that he's **** scared to come off the line for anything unless there are no opposition players within 20 yards of him, and the opposing managers know this, hence we get bombarded with crosses into our penalty box that they know will cause us problems. Just face facts, it's a weakness that has probably held him back all his career and isn't going to change now, he's League One level at best so it's time for him to move on if he doesn't want to be number 2 for BFC
there's a difference between letting and Bruce & Pallister deal with a cross and hoping Reid et al manage to clear their lines. a well drilled defence wont drop deep into their 6 yard box regardess of quality of cross, but a centre half that knows his keeper is shaking like a shitting dog behind him darent try and play offside cos he'll leave a massive gap and shoulder the blame cos 'the goalie had no chance'. a keeper staying put on his line contributes directly to the tactics the opposition employ. FACT.
Unfortunately all the goalies I have seen at Oakwell since the backpass rule wasaltered have been line hoggers.
Thats why I dont think our defence has ever improved.
All being well this new guy likes to come off his line , and isnt afraid to sweep up behind the defence as well

RE: tony bullock! he was no line hogger nt He barely played a game , he did have a flaw in that he couldnt catch.
played a fair few games for us must be somewhere near 40 ish games i would imagine never said he was any good just that he didnt stay on his line many a 50 yard dash!
RE: played a fair few games for us Got him confused with Matthew Ghent.
Just seen Bullock played almost a full season for us the year we got relegated.
That was during my Wilderness years when I didnt get to many games.

I dont remember mentioning Nick in any of that I just thought after a lot of debate about keepers who stay on their line that i'd watch some Premiership goalkeepers and how they deal with crosses into their six yard box. My conclusion was that a lot do stick to their line most of the time. Sorry if my conclusion bothered you it wasnt meant to annoy anyone. Regards NC
You didn't mention him Nick, but it was clear ......... .... that your post was a follow up to yesterdays! Football is all about opinions, you have yours, I have mine, so we will agree to differ on this one before I get the sack for wasting too much time on here! Good luck with your new club!
