Just come across this on t'interweb. Never heard of this until today apparently just after the war Wath Wanderers were the nursery/feeder club for Wolves, including the Robledo brothers and quite a bit about Barnsley players with a Wolves connection. http://www.wolvesheroes.com/2013/12/08/wath-a-story/ http://www.wolvesheroes.com/2014/01/23/more-on-the-wonder-of-wath/
When I was a nipper, our school colours were the same as Wolves and they became my second club at the time. Remember reading the Ron Flowers book as he was a bit of an early hero of mine. ( Goes all misty eyed remembering own footy prowess at the time ).
I did know about Crooks and Wath Wanderers and the local chat amongst young players were that Wolves were the only team which regularly scouted local talent. My father was in charge of South Kirkby and District boys and Peter Knowles was his star man. He did have an enquiry from Birmingham City about Knowles when he was maybe 15/16 years old, but it was always going to be Wolves via Wath Wanderers. It is amazing what truly quality players slipped away from the South Yorkshire region and to Wolves via Wath and Crooks. You could almost make up a full team of internationals over the years and it is worth remembering that, in the 1950s, Wolves were THE top team in England. Flowers, Swinbourne, Short, Sidebottom, Galley, Daley, Knowles - all the key names are listed in the article, which is a great read - thanks! I think we only saw Short in a Reds shirt of all that list - shame really! We would have had some good fees for some of those!
