England captain. Whether we agree or not, he'll start at the Euro's. But where?

It has to be Kane and Vardy up top, surely? And why would you pick Rooney in midfield ahead of Drinky, Dier, Henderson, Alli, Barkley? For what reason, what advantage?

I'm all ears. Would love to get different views on this one.

Don't get me wrong, I really like Rooney. But either up front in a two or just behind the striker. I don't see us playing a system where you'd have someone behind a striker and if we're playing a two it has to be Kane and Vardy before Wayne, surely? And so the only other option is central midfield and that would be laughable.

My feeling? Vardy will be impact sub. Kane and Rooney up front but Rooney dropping in etc.

    Thoughts?

Rooney cant get upfront for his club so he shouldn't be playing there for England.

Do I think he could be a good midfield player? Yes. Do I think he should be selected there in the Euros? No. Not starting 11 anyway.

I can see Vardy being used as a sub. Most likely being used wrongly coming on the left or right of a three.

Kane, Vardy, Alli have to start every game.

Rooney's tournament record is dreadful and there's too much young talent around to worry about old men having one last competition in them. :D
Defoe warrants a place more than Wayne, in midfield Noble and Drinkwater have much more value to the squad. I'd give him the summer off to count his money.

Not scored in ten games. Only seven Prem goals this season, despite penalties.

He's on the wane, is Wayne. That's not me winding you up, it's a sad fact unfortunately. Quite a lot of pundits (I know you value their opinions) reckon he's done. I think he's getting this last chance to achieve summat with England. I hope it's a swansong we can all remember, one where we can come back and bump this thread and have a laugh.

Great player. But I think it's about the team.

Look at that performance in Germany, beating the World Cup winners. Guess who didn't play?

I wouldn't be picking him, certainly not in the starting XI but we all know Roy will make sure he's part of his plans. Picking the same failed players on reputation is part of the reason I have had absolutely no interest in England in recent years.

** I know a lot are giving him stick but if Wilshere is fully fit I would have him behind the two forwards. He is such a clever footballer and always looking to do something positive. Shame he always gets injured.

I'd rather not start Rooney and try to get pace in our attacks but he'll definitely start so:

Rooney, Alli and Vardy in a 3 behind Kane.

I think he'll played at the top of a diamond behind Kane and Vardy which will work i think. Rooney's passing is exception and we don't really have anyone else that can pass like him.

Busted flush. We need to be able to attack with pace to have any chance against the better teams and he slows us down. I'd have him in the squad for his experience, and he might be useful to bring on to manage the closing stages of a game, but he would be nowhere near my XI.

If I'd been Roy, I wouldn't have considered taking him. Yesterday's man.

He will undoubtedly play, not that I'm sure I agree, (I'm not 100% sure I wouldn't play him either) but I will say that i don't see anyone else with his passing range and - dare I say it - footballing intelligence. He's much matured and calmed these days.

He has never really been an out and out centre forward so that argument doesn't really stand up. As a forward thinking midfield player he has been very effective recently though - and I think he might get even deeper into the Gerrard like quarter back role in the coming years.

He's not a busted flush, yes he doesn't have the legs to run the channels anymore and so cannot be an out and out centre forward, but he has other abilities, he's a natural all round footballer - when Ryan giggs was done as a left winger he was reborn and won footballer of the year as a ball retaining, more defensive central midfield player.

    My team (41212/442 diamond)

    Hart

    Clyde stones Cahill rose

    Dier

    Alli wilshere*

    Rooney

    Kane Vardy

*If wilshere is fit, otherwise I would go barkley but he's been poor, maybe lallana

**when I say my team, I mean on the assumption that we know Rooney will play so that's the best place for him.

Otherwise I might have alli at the top of the diamond behind the front two, dier still at the base, with wilshere and Barkley/Lallana - maybe a Henderson/Milner against the best sides

Can't fault the rest of your post, but it still the biggest crime in football awards, that one. Never in a million years did Giggs warrant winning POTY. It was given him for sentimentality reasons. And then it came out that he was nobbing his brothers wife. Or summat.

Superb talent, Giggsy. But nowhere near POTY when he 'won' it.

You're right though, he evolved as he got older. So I get your point. :)

Rooney's problem with England was that we never had a great forward to go with him. If Owen hadn't been crocked he and Rooney would have been lethal going all the way up to 2010. Rooney was always the lone man playing with crap, which is why at tournaments good teams either knew to mark him out of the game, or let him drop deeper and deeper until he was ineffectual. The amusing thing is now we have a forward in Kane that would compliment Rooney perfectly, except that Vardy has come along and is probably even more deserving.

I never said he deserved it !!

It just illustrated the point. John Barnes did a similar thing years before.

People won't like this but I think Rooney will play behind Kane & we'll play a 4-5-1.

Dier & Wilshere holding. He'll stick Alli wide & the other wide position will be Lallana or Sterling.

Vardy, Sturridge & Barkley as your potential game changers.

If I was in charge he wouldnt even be in the squad. The only argument for him is that he's scored a couple of penalties against very poor national teams in qualifying.

In attack, 2 of Kane, Vardy and Sturridge have to start. Personally I still believe Sturridge is our best striker when fully fit but its getting him so for any period of time. The other 2 have been exceptional this season, Kane the season before too.

In attacking midfield, both Alli and Barkley are far ahead of Rooney for me and both HAVE to start. Barkley hasnt pushed on as I'd have expected over the last 2 seasons but he is still already one of the best ball carriers in world football and that could be a big asset when looking to play on the break, like we did in Germany.

I dont see where Rooney merits getting into the side anymore. He cant even dislodge Rashford for club...

Rooney doesn't give a turtles arse about England. I say leave him at home. Get Kane and Vardy up front with Drinkwater and Alli in midfield. Simple 442. No room for never has beens like Looney
