Winnall had a header cleared off the line, while Treacy, Hemmings and Cole were all put clean through but fluffed their chances. Cole seems to miss a one-on-one every week. If they're stopped by great saves from the 'keeper you hold your hands up and say well done, but Treacy fired high and wide, while Cole and Hemmings gave the 'keeper every chance. For Chesterfield Doyle missed his easiest chance, heading straight in to Turnbull's hands when free from six yards out, but scored with two more difficult opportunities he carved out for himself. The first was a brilliant lobbed finish, the second a very poor goal to concede from our point of view. We had possession of the ball, there was little danger, but Turnbull lobbed it up in to the centre of the pitch, where there were no Barnsley players within 10 yards, so the ball came straight back to the feet of Doyle and he did what he does. But Chesterfield were the better team and I have no complaints about the scoreline. I don't believe it, but it looked like they wanted it more than us today. We looked a bit jaded. Our goal was a bit of a mess really, but at least we stuck it in. The system didn't suit Hemmings and I was surprised we stuck with it away from home. Obviously, we would have liked Williams back in the side, but if he wasn't fit enough to play I expected to see another midfielder at the expense of Hemmings. However, we didn't lose because of the system, we lost as the individual performances weren't up to the same standard as they have been recently. Cranie was quiet, no marauding runs up the line, Bailey wasn't on it at all, Hourihane could barely find a team mate with the ball all afternoon, Berry went missing for long periods and although Cole had some balls played to him up in the air (he's got to expect that) when it was played to his feet he either mis-controlled it or he was stood offside. Winnall did what he usually does and his persistence resulted in him getting his chance, which he's been sticking away recently. This time his great header was cleared off the line. Ramage and Nyatanga won their fair share of headers and did OK, but the only player who really played up to his potential for me was Dudgeon who looked lively all game and really got stuck in. My MOTM. If only one of your players is really on it and a number of others have bad games by their standards then it's going to be very difficult to win away from home. I guess the positive to take from it is that even when we were sub par, we still created enough chances to win it. We'll see a lot better from our team this season, today we just didn't do it. Disappointing, but that's football.
After listening Rad Sheff Comm it sarnded like Dudge would be in with a shart of MOTM, they also thought we were slow to react and that they wanted it more than us and deservedly got it.
Player said only Dudgeon played well too. It seem that when our players have an off day, they all have on together.
I thought the first half was pretty even but goals change games. To concede just before half time give Chesterfield the upper hand.I thought Hemmings was getting more into the game when Danny subbed him.Overall probably a fair result.Dudgeon was possibly our best player but I was very impressed with both Chesterfield full backs.
Fair summary that Jay, pretty much how I saw it. Just too many of our lads didn't perform to their usual standard. Particularly Bailey, Hourihane and Cole. Dudgeon played very well. We did become a bit predictable at times, ball passed to Ramage or Nyatanga to hit a long ball which their defenders soaked up, thought their RB had a very good game. Not gonna be too critical though, we can't be brilliant and win every game. On to the next. A few home games to come, against local (ish) sides so good chance to put it behind us and get going again.
