As mentioned in WSB, there's a series of events going on up and down the country to raise money for food banks this weekend under the banner of 'We Shall Overcome'. The idea is that bands are playing for free and instead of paying an entrance fee you make a donation of food or money. As one of the organisers of this we contacted the two food banks in Barnsley who both indicated that they would prefer cash donations as this allows them more flexibility as sometimes they run short of essentials whilst having a glut of others. The Barnsley events are being held at the Barnsley Rock and Blues venue (formerly Polish Club, just off Summer Lane). On Friday a Barsteward Sons of Val Doonican show already planned has been modified so that a proportion of the entrance money is donated to the cause and a bucket will be passed around for further donations. On Saturday the music starts at 1pm and finishes late. The format is that there are two stages, an acoustic stage and a full band stage. Music will alternate between the two stages with bands doing 30 minute sets. The night will be rounded off with a Barnsley Sime DJ set. Also on Saturday Mark Jackson (punk poet) will be doing a show under the WSO banner at Hoyland Common WMC at 7pm. On Sunday the fun starts at 2pm at the Barnsley Rock and Blues venue and finishes at 9pm. All in all there's loads of top local bands trying to raise money for a worthwhile cause. There's a raffle with some decent prizes; some Paul Caton prints, whisky, record vouchers, loads of band merch, Cannon Hall Farm tickets, butcher's vouchers etc. It'd be great if some of you could support it. https://www.facebook.com/events/1594285487507843/1645407605728964/
Over £800 raised so far. Blow off the Sunday cobwebs at the Polish Club and help us smash the £1000 barrier.
