PAUL OF FAME ON HOLD By David Anderson PAUL STURROCK has warned Sheffield Wednesday's long-suffering fans it could be at least two more years before they are back in the Premiership. Wednesday were relegated from the top flight in 2000 and chairman Dave Allen is targeting 2008 for their return. But with the club still £28million in debt from those crazy free-spending days of the late 1990s, canny Sturrock is much more cautious. "The chairman has given it a target of the end of next season," said the Wednesday boss. "Consolidation this year and then push on the next. "I'd love to promise people that the season after next will be it, but I'm much more realistic than that and I know finance dictates everything. "I'd love to put the carriage to the horses and race ahead of ourselves, but too many times this club have bought themselves into a position and again to keep them there. "People have got to appreciate this will be a much slower process. Progression is the only word I'll use and I want us to be better than last year." Sturrock's immediate concern is patching up his injury-hit squad for Saturday's Championship game at Preston and he has no goalkeeper and just two fit strikers, Deon Burton and Steve MacLean. He has eight players injured, including striker Marcus Tudgay who severed tendons in his foot by standing on glass at a family barbecue. "We're going to be in the mire for the first couple of months," warned Sturrock.
They ought to follow United's example of building a sound financial base. They're 4 to 6 years off a realistic challenge, & the sale of sale of a training ground.
Naw they have already achieved world domination.. According to Mr Owl who keeps telling me how they are "'Kin Massive!"
Maybe when they're on about Europe... They mean that Ibiza tournament they seem to play in quite regularly in pre-season.
well they are a well supported club give them that. They are not big finically, not on the pitch. The stadium is horrible, all these new stadiums in last ten years put it firmly in its place. I mean we Have 3 stands that are better than all there ground. Not in size but the old Wembley held plenty they still knocked it down.
