Win, lose or draw my tipple of choice tonight is a wonderful whisky called Dalmore 12 years. For the price it is perhaps the best whisky available.

That reminds me, i have a deal with an American colleague. He is going to get me a good american bourbon of his choice and i will get him a good Whiskey / Whisky. Laphroaig or Lagavulin were top of my list but, any recommendations?

In terms of whisky Lagavulin is very nice but you may also consider the Dalmore I posted or something like Balvenie or perhaps a Glenfiddich (18 years is beautiful) or a Glenmorangie. I could just go on listing forever. If I had to pick just one I'd go with Dalmore 12. Of course these are all single malts and there are some very nice blended malts available too.

The best American Bourbons (IMO) are Woodford Reserve, Elijah Craig and Bulleit.

I sampled this last year and all I can say is that it is an utterly fantastic bourbon. Too pricey to drink every night but if I had the money I would always have a bottle in.

Oh and I forgot to mention Dalwhinnie 15 in my last post. Slightly cheaper than Dalmore but still a very nice whisky and very drinkable.

MK - like yourself I quite like the Glenfiddich/Glenmorangie but I'm not au fait with the Lagavulin - before I put it on my Christmas wish list can you describe it please?

The one I've tried is the 16 year which is a little pricey at just over £50 but it is delicious. It's quite typical of Islay malts in that quite peaty and smokey. Hints of sherry, fruit and vanilla. I'm trying to think of a similar whisky to compare it too but I'm struggling. I'd say buying a sample for a few quid would be a good option if you want to try without splashing out first.
