BARNSLEY showed more than a glimpse of a bright Oakwell future as they dominated Queens Park Rangers for most of the game but just could not find a goal which would have rocked Loftus Road to its foundations.
Seconded Sounds like lots of positives, and at least one of their goals sounds like had a bit of luck attached to it. Glad we've got that one out of the way so early. Roll on next Sat, can't wait.
A sign of how woeful we have become away from home People happy and relieved with a single goal defeat.
RE: Seconded I just don't understand the mentality of those saying Davey out. He's doing a fine job. Outplayed QPR today. We've got Anderson De Silva to come back, we've got Hugo Colace waiting in the wings. Rigters has yet to show is stuff. Muller will soon be fit to challenge Steele for the No.1 jersey. Howard's still with us, who created the goal for Hume today. 1st of many goals for Hume. We've got a bright season ahead of us, I'm sure.
Exactly we have played brilliantly, going on what Sky have said we was the better side. PLUS there goals where in the space of 2 minutes of each other, so we could put it down to smash & grab Well done lads (Y)
Happy? Who said I was happy? I'm obviously disappointed that we have lost, but it sounds like we played OK for most of the match. Good sign, that's all I'm saying.
I'm not in the rose-tinted specs brigade or the doom/gloom brigade for that matter. It's the 1st game FFS. What good is it getting on their backs after 1 game.
RE: I'm not in the rose-tinted specs brigade or the doom/gloom brigade they get on their backs because they know nothing about football and don't really SUPPORT Barnsley. They sound more like Wednesday fans just knocking our team for the fun of it. COME ON YOU REDS!!!!!!!!!!!
but we were the better team and they were very lucky, and it was never a penalty, and we have lots of injuries. We lost, simple as that. so we were NOT the better team Simon Davey as they quite clearly did what they were supposed to do better than us. they stopped us scoring as many goals as they scored at the other end. We didn't.
hehe. Let's vote for Jenson Button for BBC Sports Personality of the Year. He doesn't win anything, but boy is he good at pit stops.
Based on today's showing it sounds like we have plenty of reason to think that we'll have a half decent season. However, at the end of the day we still lost, and I for one am gutted.
Having been there I can't share your optimism. We are going to concede bucket loads unless the defence is addressed, as many have been saying it should for season after season. Contrary to popular wisdom we looked half decent going forward, particularly with the interplay between Hume and Macken and it was the left side of defence of Souza and Van Homoet which was the glaring cause for alarm (along with the full back playing in midfield, but we all knew that would be the case). I'll put my head above the parapet with some individual comments:- Steele - Two or three really good saves and the penalty. 7 Foster - Fairly quiet, wrongly penalised for the free kick for their first, one or two timely interceptions in the second half. 6 Van Homoet - 0, not a championship standard right back, let alone left back. Hassell-esque decision by Davey to play him there. Rightly sent off and only blessing is that he's now got a ban. Moore - Solid and strong, when he could stand up. Obviously lacks a yard of pace but against a team like QPR with big guys up front for most of the game, he can do a job. 6 Souza - Shown up for lack of pace, being out of position and not strong enough (surprisingly). 2 Devaney - Dangerous at times, worked hard and had some nice touches, crossing lets him down as only 1 in 3 is half-decent, 6. Howard - Curate's egg of a performance, some nice touches going forward, some good passing and also some less good, 6. Hassell - The proverbial fish out of water in midfield, 2. El Haimour - God knows why we didn't use him more. Very quick, crossing seemed okay but only had the ball half a dozen times as far as I remember. 6 Macken - Made Gorkss look daft all afternoon and ought to have got more out of the bent official. 7 Hume - Some nice interplay with Macken on the floor. Good finish and looked as if he could do well if we can get him the ball on the floor in advanced positions. 8 Subs Rigter, Odejayi and Leon hardly touched the ball and so can't really be judged on that performance. Slightly odd that Macken was subbed and Hume moved to left wing 2-1 down with less than 10 to go, even if we were down to ten men. Other than a few individuals, QPR were poor and given they were lacking a good few players, I'd say we got away lightly defensively. We did have the lion's share of the possession in the second half but did not have many clear cut opportunities. We might have had more but for a clearly bent ref (never a free kick for the first goal) and ridiculous lino (I'm convinced that the first was also offside or handball or both) who was just not up to the job. Sorry if the above is negative, I'm usually positive about things and there were postives in parts of the peformance but I'm very frustrated at our ability to put together a cohesive defensive unit and can only see us conceding shedloads unless this is addressed. My concern is that the manager doesn't seem to see this.
