    Even if your car is kept in your garage and not used it still has to be insured unless it's declared SORN. I always thought that was only for tax

    Well, your car has to be insured in order for it to be taxed, so what you are saying is if you declare SORN (i.e. off the road) it doesn't need to be insured. So that ties in.

    It's a fairly new law, it only came into (e)affect (sp) about 2 or 3 years ago I believe. Definitely whilst I've been driving.

    Incorrect. Every car/bike I've taxed needed proof of insurance and I've been on the road for 10 years now.

    It's the other way round. If you're keeping the car off the road you have to declare SORN. If you don't they assume it's not off the road and hence it needs to be taxed and insured else they can take it away and scrap it.
