Roy Hodgson fears for the future of the England team because of the number of foreign players in the Barclays Premier League.
Hodgson claims he is selecting his squad from a decreasing pool of talent because of the number of overseas stars in the top flight, and worries the national team will be dragged into a World Cup play-off after last month’s poor performance against Montenegro in Group H.
Hodgson, who succeeded Italian Fabio Capello as the country’s coach last May, said: ‘I go to quite a few games these days and there are no English players. One has to be very careful talking about the Premier League and the Englishness of it because two thirds of the players are not English. We have one of the lowest numbers of homegrown players and that must put us at a major disadvantage to other nations.’

Needed saying as none of the so called pundits dare say it!!!!!

    I dont agree.
I think the English players should be playing against the best in the world week in week out.........this will make them better players
If the English players are good enough they will get into the Premeirship.
Problem is...........that not many English players at the moment are actually good enough.
There's a definite dip in the talent coming through..........in my opinion there is only Wiltshire and Welbeck of the new crop that are good enough

Roy is just throwing up a smoke screen to disguise this fact

Yes but the reason good English players are not coming through is because of all the foreign players.

It would be interesting to see how many English players Roy signed while managing in the Premier League.

Not really it wouldn't. It's not the role of an individual manager or club to take a stand.

Roy made signings within the parameters of the budgets and rules given to him.

If the rules has included a limit on the number of foreign players he would have signed less of them, as would any other manager.

The argument about playing against better opposition I nearly agree with. The problem is I reckon at least 50% of the foreign players over here don't fall into the category of better, and are taking the places of good young players and players in the championship who could be improving themselves by playing against better opposition every week.

There needs to be a limit on the influx of mediocre foreign players. For every bergkamp or Ronaldo there's been a bosko balaban or a mido.

Only same as what us poor folks who know nowt about footy have been saying for years.

Best two sides in Europe have about two thirds of their respective top flights to pick a squad from.
