The day started off pretty **** when we were told at work that one of our colleagues, a man in his mid thirties with four small children, had died from cancer. The day had been somewhat of a blur when I get a call from another colleague to ask me to take over, call an ambulance and keep an eye on the unconscious bloke that he'd just found up the road! Cut a long story short, it turned out that the bloke was a polish worker who was in dispute with his emplyer and had turned up for work somewhat worse for wear and had been sent home! He didn't get too far as he collapsed about 100 yards away from where he works.

So, the lessons I've learned today are

    a) you never know what's around the corner so enjoy life while you can

    b) how kind people are. There were several people that stopped their cars and offered me their assistance whilst waiting for the ambulance to arrive

    c) I'm selfish - I was too worried about the bloke waking up and attacking me in his confusion ( I had an idea that he could have been drunk given that someone had seen him staggering around the streets earlier on) that I didn't make any attempt to rouse him. I saw that he was breathing, made sure he was in the recovery position, but that was it.

Not selfish cazi, more sensible than anything. Not only were you protecting yourself but you don't know what could have happened if you had moved him, these day's he could have tried suing you for moving him or something.

You get a choice, either that or a free under 11 year old. Tommy Tyke took the under 11 option.

I now have a very strange image of Joseph being arrested and having is furniture building equipment seized as evidence.

I think you did all the right things. Unless you are well qualified paramedic or ambulance technician, it's not a good idea to move someone unless they're in danger of positional asphixia, or they have problems with their circulation/vital signs. As for him rousing in an aggressive state - it's a legitimate concern, and something less clued up people don't bother to protect themselves from (it's terrible - you want to trust everyone, but you'd blame yourself even more if you'd gotten hurt). At the end of the day, you looked after him until the professionals arrived, and believe it or not, there are less sympathetic people who would have walked past and turned a blind eye to an unconscious drunk guy.
